choral

New choral work, a cappella. Mix in progress, the beginning done up to about 0:50. First time I've recorded using EW symphonic choirs (Soprano, alto and tenor) in kontakt2, combined with Voices of the Apocalypse (bass) in gigastudio. First recording using sonar 5, too!

[edit] links deleted, finished with this, thanks to all![/edit]

Ave regina coelorum,
Ave domina angelorum.
Salve radix, salve porta
Ex qua mundo lux est orta.

Gaude Virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa.
Vale O valde decora,
Et pro nobis Cristum exora.

Guglielmo

Sounds pretty good except for the G in regina and the basses don't sound too real.
Why did you choose to use basses from a different product?
We used symphonic choir boy sopranos on on Blessiong V2 on my soundclick page.

    Hi Gugliel,

Interesting. I look forward to hearing the full work.

It's a little hard to tell from the recording but it sounds like you are using the accepted (i.e. what you hear in church) pronunciation of the words. It's been a long time since my latin classes, but as I recall Ave would be pronounced "A-way" and the g in regina would be hard, i.e. like in "great". Wouldn't it be interesting to use the actual Roman pronunciation?

    Just a thought.

Still working on this, as on everything with samples, to make it more right ...

Troy, the symphonic choirs basses go only as high as an A, so it takes a lot of work to get a full bass line programmed working around that -- when I get time, I'll do what the makers should have done and make the notes extend to cover a full vocal bass range. The soprano had the same problem, only going down to an A (leaving off the lower fifth of their range). Completely dumb, imo, but that's one of the many drawbacks of this package. Trying to use it anyway!

Jeff, ecclesiastical latin is different than classical, especially in some of the sounds at the beginning of this: the G, the V, etc. There will be a note on the sheet music indicating my preference for italianate ecclesiastical latin. One could certainly do it differently, but that's how I was imagining it, with the V instead of W and J instead of G and so on.

    Thanks for listening.

It's amazing what can be done with software today!! Nice job. People would have killed 15 years ago for software like we now use.

Just to echo the previous comment. If you hadn't said it were samples and I just had it on in the background I'd never have known it wasn't a "real" choir. Impressive stuff.

    Gugliel,
I really like it. The initial theme reminds me of Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus; something that I truly enjoy. You branch out from there with the second theme at 1:20 and beyond, very nice.

Sonically, the basses do not have the same resonant timbre to match the rest, they have a significant fundemental at the expense of harmonic content, perhaps a light eq to reduce below around 200Hz.

Thanks much for listening and your points of view -- finished up with the recording to the extent necessary and deleted the links. Hopefully you'll hear it in a year or two at a chorus near you.
