M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB Pre

Has anyone worked with one of these M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB Pre's yet? I have a tight budget, but I've been recording through a Mackie 1402 that I've had since around 1990 and was thinking it might be time to try something new. I realize inexpensive mic pre's are not the greatest, but I can't imagine it would be any worse than the old gig-worn Mackie.

I see that M-Audio's earlier and cheaper Fast Track USB had terrible reviews.

Any thoughts or recommendations are welcome, thanks!

Can't comment on the pre's but I would be a little Leary of USB 1, not the best audio. For a couple extra bucks you could get a Fire wire interface.

Okay, I know this is gonna sound dumb, but:

How does that work exactly? Do I have to get a firewire card for my PC? I don't have a fite wire port currently.

Also, I was just planning to got out of the RCA or S/PDIF to my M-Audio 2496 soundcard...would firewire be a better choice for preserving audio quality than either of those 2 choices?

    Thanks for your input.

Since you already have a M-Audio 2496 you could just get a pre amp. Pre amps range from $100 to thousands of dollars. I'd do a search on the forum, there has been alot good discussions on pre amps.
