MB with pc133

I was hoping one of you gurus might help me out. I'd like to upgrade my system to the top of the line AMD 64 but that will have to wait a while longer. In the mean time I had hoped to get by with just getting a faster CPU.

I have a MSI 6528le MB with a 1.8 Ghz P4. The MB will handle up to a 2.8Ghz CPU but I haven't been able to find one. Because this MB uses PC133 ram (I have 1GB) I was thinking maybe another MB and an AMD CPU. But what combo will enable me to reuse the ram?

I'm still looking but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Paul

dude, the RAM you want to save is obsolete -still available in limited quantities, but out of production. I'm in a similar boat - old MOBO, no CPU upgrade path that's worth spending money on. So - I scored an Abit board based on NV2 chipset, new DDR 333 RAM, and an Athlon XP (not 64 - waiting to for the bugs to shake out.)

You might want to look here for a CPU to upgrade your existing system with. I checked the MSI site - this MOBO is using the 845 family of chipset, and my Intel D845PEBT2 is running a 533 FSB on DDR 333 so I'm not sure why MSI has the MS-6528LE running on PC133 SDRAM. Also, MSI states CPU support of 2.2GHz and up, so I'm certain you'll need a BIOS upgrade to get the 2.8 you're talking about. I defnintely would check with MSI support before spending any money

Thanks for the come back Bruce. Yep, same boat. The MSi 6528LE will take up to a 2.8GHz P4 Northwood (400FSB) but they are nowhere to be found. I checked for 2.6 and 2.4, no dice.

Soooo... I was hoping there might be some combination of AMD and MB that used the PC133 that would be more powerful than what I have now (and of course, wouldn't cost an arm and a leg).

My plan is to build a new box around an AMD 64x2. I just can't do it now.

    Thanks again. Any other thoughts.

I'm offering my IWill KK266R (via chipset) with an Athlon (reliably clocked @ 1.44 GHz) and 512MB PC133 SDRAM for $50 - Speeze CPU cooler thrown in, no charge. It's not an upgrade for you - more like a downgrade. It just doesn't pass the muster with the new applications I put on it.

I can't find any MOBO that uses SDRAM for sale new, either - maybe someone on eBay is selling off?

Thanks Bruce. I did some price checking on Newegg and found I can probably put together a new MB, CPU and Ram for around $600. The question is will I see enough improved performance.

What do you think? I'm going back and check Scott Ream's test thread.

I have 3 in my closet. I used with a P3 1 ghz. Socket 370. If anyone is looking. They worked when I pulled them.....JDW

Whoah - Screamin' board! "1600 MT/s HyperTransport Bus", SATA2 (300MB/s burst transfer rate) - wow, I can't speak from esxperience about the Via K800 chipset but I've read good things. One point - I only see 2 DIMM slots, so I would go with a single 1GB stick rather than 2 512Mb sticks.

Thanks John, however P3 is going backward. I have seen some of those boards out there but again... Interesting too, that old ram is twice the price of PC 3200.

Good call! Scott's teast thread showed the Athlon 64's did pretty good compaired to the P4 1.8's.
