Windless Song (Maybe Finished Now)

Windless Song

I made a tune to go with this old poem by George MacDonald about how the Earth has no worries, just buzzing through space, and he sort of equates "no worries" with "faith".

"Earth, if aught should check thy race,
Rushing through unfended space,
Headlong, stayless, thou wilt fall
Into yonder glowing ball!"

Refrain: Sail on, sail on, thous fearless one

"Beggar of the universe,
Faithless as an empty purse!
Sent abroad to cool and tame,
Think'st I fear my native flame?"

"If thou never on thy track
Turn thee round and hie thee back,
Thou wilt wander evermore,
Outcast, cold—a comet soar!"

"While I sweep my ring along
In an air of joyous song,
Thou art drifting, heart a'flee,
From the sun of liberty!"

This reminded me a bit of "Across the universe" by the Beatles. I like the words and it sounds like the basis for a good track.

You know, I don't think I ever heard of that one. I've owned several Beatles records since I was a kid but I guess I never owned the one this was on. Thanks for your comments.

    Joe:

I like the idea. The delay scheme is interesting. With some instrumental structure and maybe a break (take me through space on a comet) it would be cool piece.

I agree reminds me of that beatles tune too. Heard a
few bad notes in the vox, at about 1:10-1:12... a note
or notes in the vox there didn't sound right. Sounds like
a difficult song to sing in general with the approach you're using.

Also sounds like you didn't spend much time on the whole
song. Overall, it has potential. I think if you added drums
and bass and worked on the vox a little more it'll sound
lot better, IMO. I like the organ sound (if it's an organ)
may be a guitar, which is it? Sound quality was good but
feel you could get better. I think you could get a better
vocal sound too. Nice mellow tune though. With the
right production it could be even nicer.

Well, I almost didn't post it at all. Like I said, its just a first take stereo recording of an idea I spent all of 20-minutes on. I've already started the final version which has a short intro and some ebow stuff at the end. But drums? Heck no!

    Just a suggestion.

But yes, it can also work well without drums.

I've posted the new version now (same link).

I put a short intro on it and added a vocal refrain between the verses, as well as adding a harmony vocal. I may put an extended ending on it later too... don't know yet. This may be it. I know the vox are much better now but please feel free to let me know if there's anything that drives you nuts.

BTW, if anybody has an mp3 of that Beatles tune mentioned I would like to hear what it sounds like. Is it something you think I would recognize if I heard it? I hope it doesn't sound too much like this....

PS, I've got some grocery shopping to do but I'll try and listen to some more of you'all's tunes tonight when I get back.

Sounds much better Joe. Enjoyed it.

Here's the TAB and lyrics for "Across the universe" if that's any help. It's sung by Lennon btw at about the same tempo as your song.

Oh yeah, I know that song. You think it sounds like that? Well, I guess they have the same slow bounce so I can see what you mean. Anyway, if I lived to be a hundred I never thought anyone would ever compare anything I did to something by the Beatles, so I can now go to my grave in peace. Although I'm not sure how well John Lennon's gonna take the news. "I heard the news today oh! oiy!"

I think Across The Universe was on Let It Be...is that right? Some similarities for sure...you even have the word 'universe' in your song

Cool use of Delay/Echo here...kinda reminded me of Brian May...I hear the similarites to "Across The Universe" in the verse...but to my ears, this still has it's own vibe to it...Nice job...I dig it!

    Thanks for the comments all.

Hey Pluto, I never even thought of a female vocalist there before. That might not be a bad idea.

As to the echo thing giving a feeling of movement and all, Les Paul was doing that way back when. I don't know who invented the idea. My favorite use of it was on "The Point", that children's animated special that Harry Nilsson did the music for. If you can recall, it was about a little boy with a round head like us who grew up in the Land of Point, where everything was pointed including the people's heads, so he was made fun of by the other kids. There was a tune on that called "Life Line" that made great use of that echo effect. Here's a 50-second excerpt from it if you care to listen:
