Preamp/ Patchbay question

Ok, so can I not run my preamp outs to a patchbay, then to my Delta 1010s? I always get slight distortion doing this!

I'm using a Behringer PX1000 patchbay.

Thanks!

Did you mean noise instead of distortion? I can see noise being introduced by a faulty patchbay or cables - or EM interference, but I wouldn't think that any sort of cabling could introduce distortion.

Nope, at high volumes, my signals distort- an artifact in my sound that is not present when I go straight from preamp to Delta

first the Behringer is a balanced line level at input on the patchbay...* are* you are running an unbalanced signal into it?

Also how do you have your patchbay configured?...there are 5 different ways to configure the PX1000....

The patchbay configures itself, depending on how it is patched.

I'm using balanced cables, and am fairly confident that my pre is balanced on the outputs as well.

honestly patchbays are the last place you should use cheap slave labor manufactured behringer gear. I'm not going to say I dont use behringer. I just dont expect it to be reliable or high spec.
The patch bay is where you take your balanced signal and expose it to an unshielded pass, and also introduce at least 2 switches, and usually more. If I am recording just 2 or 3 signals I strive to avoid patchbays. All they do is add cable and more connections and switches that can fail, degrade or distort the signal.
That said, when I am making electronic music (Kraftwerk, Caberet Voltaire style) I extensively use patchbays.
I reccomend fully sheilded patchbays, like switchcrafts and neutriks. You could actually spend more than $5 grand on a real patch set up, with Edac or DB 25 sub connectors for each rack and/or all cables wired directly to the rack for better signal. Some even come with a third row for mults. But a better quality Nuetrik probably will only cost about $90, and an hour or three behind your rack!

I just replaced about $1000 worth of Hosa cables and patch bays with hand wired Star Quad cables and bypassed my Mackie mic pres. What a HUGE sonic difference!! I hadn't been using the patch bays since I went all internal DAW mixing, they were a hold-over from my all-analog mixing days.

Anyone who spends 5K on patchbays is getting suckered in the most pathetic way. <G
