Your Name - for Charlotte Grace Yanofsky's funeral

Jeff is a good friend (www.jeffsomersband.com), and he wrote this song a day before Charlotte's funeral. He performed it at her funeral too... For anyone that doesn't know, Charlotte was our 13 day old baby girl that died on September 23, 2005.

I'm really happy with the song, it's very personal. I added piano to it. May add orchestral instruments later on, but for now this is it.

Hey Michael...

I just realized this is probably the first time you've heard me play true piano... (I remember you'd asked months and months back for some sort of example of my playing...) I wish it could have been under better circumstances that I got to play something for you, but what can ya do, eh? Yeah, the one you received by email was the first draft... After talking with Jeff, he felt the piano was a bit hot in the mix, and there was a part right where the bass guitar comes in that I played a couple notes, but taking them out fit a bit better... And he wanted more reverb on the piano... All the changes I agreed with for sure, and the piano does sit really nicely in the back of the mix...

Yeah... I agree with Michael. In fact, I would have put the piano, perc. etc (except the bass) in the same ambient space as the guitar to make them sound as though they are in the same room.

Fwiw..... I do not want to get too wrapped up in the mix as a whole more than the purpose behind the tune as a whole.

Thanks for the offer... unfortuneatly, all I had from the original mix was the stereo L/R wave files, which I just imported into Sonar. Then I added the piano. I did back off some of the reverb, at least... http://www.greenroomeast.com/Mp3/Jeff%20Somers%20-%20Your%20Name.mp3 It was a little much I think. I could ask the guy that recorded it if he could give me the wave files of each track (guitar, vocals, bass, percussion, etc...) and then take it from there. He does everything with a Roland VS-2480.

The guy that recorded it was doing it for Jeff, pretty much as a favor, so at no charge. That said, they didn't spend a huge amount of time on it, they just wanted to get me a decent rendition of the song. Then I added some piano, but I couldn't re-mix what they already recorded/mixed. I can't believe Jeff could actually SING IT at the funeral. He did a good job tho. It was a very beautiful funeral service, and about 150 people came. He also sang I Can Only Imagine (an acoustic version) while there was a powerpoint multimedia presentation playing on a screen behind him, with pictures and videos of Charlotte. He said as long as he didn't turn around and look at the screen he might do ok. heh. I originally didn't expect him to play guitar for that song either, but he said he wanted to. He said he basically just needed something to hold on to during the song (i.e. his guitar) ... Again, I don't know how he did it, but he did.
