I'm having a little microphone trouble...

i need a little help regarding vocal and instrumental recording for homestudio 2004, if anyone has any info.

ive just purchased the AKG perception 200 microphone, along with the "female to 1/4" and "1/4 to 1/8" adapters to plug into the computer. when i arm a track for recording, the microphone does not pick up any sound. is this a homestudio problem or a microphone problem? any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
sam

What you're doing with the microphone is totally wrong. That's a condenser mic and it needs phantom power to work. You have to plug it into either a mic pre-amp or an audio interface with a mic input - both must have a source of phantom power to supply the mic.

ok is this what you mean?

plug the microphone into the pre-amp with a mic cable, then from the pre-amp (along with the other connections) to the computer? what kind of phantom power goes in to the pre-amp? thanks for your help.

Use a mic cable with XLR connectors to connect the mic to the mic pre-amp. The audio output on the pre-amp is connected to your computer soundcard's line input. You did not state what soundcard your computer uses. The mic pre-amp supplies the phantom power for the mic through the mic cable.

Here's a list of mic pre-amps ranging from very expensive to reasonably priced

Yes, that mixer will work. Actually, I have the same mixer in my setup. I wanted to recommend it in my post above, but though you might want to spring for a standalone pre-amp. However, the mixer will give you added flexibility.
