How can I get better MIDI SOUNDS?

No way, I'd go with BFD for drums. Especially with the new expansion pack.

um .. Vincent just recorded a "sax track" ... using the TTS-1 !
How can BFD help when probably he's looking for a simple solution for some generic all around better sounds ?
we don't know his PC's specs.. even Colossus might be too much there (not just the money..)

One thing you might try is Soundfonts. Soundfonts are basically sample sets you can get for free, driven by a softsynth like LiveSynth Pro or the free sfz plug-in (available here: http://www.rgcaudio.com/sfz.htm).

You can find individual instruments, or whole General MIDI sets. If you don't mind paying a little extra, you might try Sonic Implants. They have very high quality Soundfonts, along with many other formats. Their drum implants are very good and can really make a MIDI track come to life. They usually have a few freebies to download, too.

There's really no reason to spend all that money on big, bulky monitors, when there are much more economical, home-made solutions available. For example, you can easily make your own professional monitoring headphones!

Go to your local thrift store and look for a pair of old AM transistor radios. They don't have to match, or even work. When you find a suitable pair, take them home and smash them open with a hammer. Pull out what's left of the little speakers, being careful to keep the wires intact. Next, you will need two of those little shallow catfood cans. Remove the lids from the cans with an electric can-opener. For best results, empty the catfood before proceeding. Then, create a hole in the back of each can by driving a nail through them.

Now you will need some wire. Find an old lamp and cut the cord off at both ends. Next, cut off about 1 foot of the cord. You should now have two sections of cable, one long and one short. Strip about an inch of insultation off the ends of all the wires using a dull pocket knife. Now, push the short cord through the holes of the cat food cans and twist the exposed wires onto the speaker terminals. Then, push the longer cord through one of the cans, and twist those wires also onto one of the speaker's terminals. Secure the speakers into the cat food cans with generous portions of duct tape. Now, connect the cans together with a coat hanger to complete the assembly. Again, secure with plenty of duct tape.

Finally, you will need a 1/4" plug for your headphones. This is the most important component, so you will need to cut the connector off of a good set of working headphones (preferrably somebody else's). You might try visiting a local recording studio for this, as they usually have lots of headphones lying around. When nobody is looking, snip the end off an expensive looking pair and quickly pocket it. When you get home, simply twist the wires of the plug together with the wires of your cable, and PRESTO! You have your very own hi-fi professional monitoring system!
