What is the Cakewalk Picture Cache...

1. What is it?

2. When I try to change where the Picture Folder is in Global Settings, it just goes back to the C: Drive.

3. Should I care?

I'd like all data stored on my separate physical drive and the program only on the C: drive.

Hardware:
Intel Duo Quad 2.8 each, 4GB RAM
Delta 1010LT, GE-Force FX8200
Software:
Sonar X2a, BFD Drum Module XFL
Dimension Pro, Native Instruments B4 II
Native Instruments Guitar Rig 3, Sound Forge 9.0

    1. It's the folder where all the .WOV files are stored - these are the waveform images/patterns that are displayed with your audio clips and tracks in your project files.

    2. How strange.

    3. No.

Scott Garrigus the author of SONAR Power books, conveys it's not a good idea to change the picture catch folder and place it on another HDD other than where it's installed. It's good to have your audio files saved to a 2nd HDD 7200rpms or faster, but Scott Garrigus suggests that it's not a good idea to move your picture catch folder there, too. The reason not to move the picture catch folder is because the audio file pictures have problems loading in SONAR when you move the picture catch folder. I think I'm recalling this right.

    Just thought I'd mention this.

    Hi Dan,

As Thomas said, you should keep your Picture folder on your C drive along with the Sonar software. Put audio files on a separate drive for better performance.

This folder simply holds the image files that pertain to the graphic representation of the waveforms of your audio tracks in Sonar. It allows Sonar to quickly draw the waveforms when loading up a project. You can delete the files at any time to clear hard drive space. Sonar will then recreate the files when you open your projects.

    Best regards,
    Scott

    Hi Scott -

Do you plan a book on Kontakt 2? I would like to buy a "power" book that would help use K2 with Sonar 5.

You missed what I said earlier, I know I'm supposed to be able to do it there, but when I do and then go back, it's changed back to the C:/Cakewalk location... but the point's moot since I'm going to leave it there as advised.

If it's a part-time drive and Sonar was ever started while it was off-line, Sonar would probably revert to it's picture cache default.

Is you aud.ini read-only perhaps? Sometimes happens when you restore a file from cd or something...

    Hi Dale,

No, I don't have any plans for Kontakt 2 at the moment. I wish I could write a book on every program out there. Then I'd be rich. Unfortunately, it takes anywhere from 4 to 6 months to write a new book (unless you don't care about the quality and then it can probably be done in 3 months). If only I were Superman.

    Best regards,
    Scott
