Be sure to experiment by moving the mic around to get the sound the way you want it, but I'd start with counting up from the tuning pegs to the 12th fret and put the mic about 8-12" away, aiming it at the soundhole.
Hope that gets you started...A little tip (you may know this already), but, taking more time to get the sound right on the front end will save you ALOT of time later when you are mixing.

    Good luck,
    Eric

    Martin,

I am a classical guitarrist and had recorded myself playing guitar several times. The best results I have got so far is by using two mics (stereo recording). Last time I placed two mics (stereo pair) in a coincident-pair configuration in front of the guitar, at about 2 ft from the guitar body. This gives a very realistic and depth sound. I have never got good results when micing with just one mic.

I mic a classic guitar all the time. to combat my room noise I close mic near the 12th fret with a small condenser as soundweaver suggests, but I usually am 6" or less away. I find that the angle of the mic to the soundboard affects the sound significantly so you need to play with it with the cans on. I usually use another mic 2 feet away (large condenser) to get some body sound from the guitar. This mic picks up more room noise, but in my case that is mostly high freq, since I'm after more guitar body sound I roll off the highs on this mic prior to mixing.

I find this setup gives me the most flexibility on mixdown to get a particular sound. Hope this helps.
