After I record a track, I have to wait....

After i record a track the program seems to hang for 5-10 sec or so untill the tracks apear, only then i can edit the tracks.

I am doing a big project involving live recordings of voice and lots of mistakes and i need to stop to edit all the time, 20 seconds x 400 times a session = my cash going down the tube.

First, what are your system specs?

Second, why haven't you patched your version of S4 past 4.0.1?

You'll find them on the Sonar 4 Support page. You'll have to download and install them sequentialy from 4.0.2 to 4.0.4 to get to the latest version. Although this may be a very bad day to try and dowload them. With the realease of the S5.0.1 patch, their server is taking a beating.

You might try deleting the .wov files in your picture cache folder so Sonar will redraw them one time (takes time).
However, you might try increasing the size of your piccache so that your system will hold more wov files (they are the graphical representation of your audio data ...waveforms).

If you have a slow hard drive, that will be a cause of extra wait time, however.

Try emptying or increasing your Pic Cache size in AUD.INI. It sounds like it's full and Sonar pauses for inventory to determine its FIFO candidate.

Another vote for the pic cache.

I have defragmented my audio disk with success as well. Make sure you have a backup of it before you start messing with it.

After Sonar records an audio track, it saves a file that contains a graphical representation of the waveform, which is exactly what is displayed in the Track View. If it was a long recording (ie.- several minutes), it will take a few seconds for Sonar to make the picture. That's why you can't see the waveform right away.

Now, you may ask why doesn't Sonar make this picture files while recording the audio? Well, I guess that's because it would mess up with disk access which could result in recording glitches.

In any case, my guess is that after recording, Sonar re-scans the audio file to build the waveform picture. This means that the main performance factor here is the hard disk speed. I don't know if the I/O Buffer settings in Sonar have any effect on this but you could try bumping them up and see if that helps (bigger buffers = less disk access).

Another thing worth trying is setting the Picture Cache folder to a different disk than the Audio Data folder. This would allow Sonar to save the waveform picture file during recording without interfering with disk access for audio recording; however, I don't know if Sonar would take advantage of this set up.

And yes, definitely make the Pic Cache bigger.

I would think twice about emptying it, though. It helps when you're starting new projects, but when you open a recent project, all the audio tracks will have to be re-scaned before Sonar can show their waveforms.

Don't have to worry about that. Pic cache...is....just cache. So no worries about deleting files in that dir. Just make sure it's the right dir. LOL :D

You know, making a new empty pic cache folder (as a test) seemed to do the trick. thank you for your help everyone.

I was not sure if it was safe to delete so a created a new one but now i know, its just a cache so whats the harm.
