software suitable for 12 year old?

Hi, brand new to this forum and not sure where I should be looking. My 12 year old son is a fledgling keyboardist, and would like software enabling him to hook up his keyboard to a computer, generate sheet music and toy around with his compositions.

Is Music Creator appropriate for this? If not, can you point me in the right direction of what software might be good for a kid? The key thing for me is that the software should not be so complicated that it's going to require me to spend an in ordinate amount of time figuring it out myself, and explaining it to him.

Thanks for any suggestions and advice.

Yoru son can do what you would like with Music Creator. However, if you skim through this forum quickly, you will find two things that will require some further research:

    1. There is a learning curve for this software (and most recording software). There can be lots of frustration while learning - and I suspect that you will be doing most of the learning.

    2. I don't use the sheet music/notation feature in Music Creator, but just type in "Sheet Music" or "Notation" in the search box - you will find lots of problems/complaints for this particular program.

Music Creator is a very inexpensive, yet powerful, program for recording. It does work and works well for what it does. If you are looking for a beginner program that will allow him to input MIDI data from his keyboard and make good looking sheet music, MC will do that. You can download the Sonar demo HERE and give it a whirl - MC is a watered down version of Sonar.

You should also look at SONGWRITER from Finale. I don't use that program, but it is a sheet music generation program that will write the sheet music from keyboard input. I don't know what it sounds like and I don't know if you can change what internal synth (or if you can route the output to your kids keyboard) that the program uses. I also don't know what the learning curve is, but it may be less than MC. You may be able to download a trial version of Songwriter.

I'm sure others will weigh in with their opinions, so stay tuned and good luck.

This is a free lite version of Anvil which might be a little more user friendly than mc and if you are just doing midi it is great for it...however if you want to record audio you need to buy a larger version. http://www.anvilstudio.com/indexu.htm

    That's a great start, thanks.

One more point I'll make is that, since none of the software appears prohibitively expensive, I don't mind buying a simpler program at first, if it enables my son to get interested and have some relatively quick satisfaction. I can always get something more sophisticated if his interest persists.

And most 12 year olds are more fluent in computerese now than I was when I started. It does take some time to get it to where you're actually doing something, but despite the initial frustrations, I think MC is well worth it.
First, is his keyboard MIDI compatible? MIDI offers great flexibility in recording and editing, and fiddling around.
Secondly, is your computer capable? The minimum specs are just adequate, and, as usual, the faster it is and the more memory you have, the better.
Is your sound card capable? Give us a rundown of your computer's specs and the type of sound card which is installed in it. Almost everyone has to upgrade the card, due to the stock card's inadequacies, are merely for better performance.
Lastly, are YOU ready for the investment in time it will no doubt cost you in helping him through the initial set up and the expense of the upgrades when he gets good and wants to upgrade to Sonar and a $1300 keyboard?
I wish they had these type programs when I was 12, back in the stone age, but I think your son will get great enjoyment from MC. Greg

The keyboard is a Yamaha PSR 292.

The computer was bought this summer and is running XP, service pack 2, so should have ample memory and speed. I just tried checking the sound card, but I'm not even sure where to look for that. I looked under device manager and saw something that said Realtec AC' 97 Audio. Is that the same thing as the sound card?

In any event, I am certainly prepared to buy a better sound card.

I am prepared to invest some time in the initial set-up, and also don't mind future upgrades. I just don't want to spend the next few weeks of my life devoted entirely to getting everything to work right.

yes...that is the same as your sound card...it is actually a sound chip...i had that chip when i started as well...and you will need to put in a new sound card.

There is a soft ware program from YAMAHA that has a beginner program for keyboards. I think it has the stuff you're looking for. I've had a demo sample from them when I bought my DD-55 Drum machine. ( like a Keyboard survival kit ) . But that was a while ago and I don't know if they still have it. You might try that.

My son got Music Creator when he was 12 (2 years ago) and picked it up reasonably well. Was quickly connecting his Yamaha keyboard PSR550 and transmitting MIDI both ways.

He is now producing CD's for family and friends so I would recommend it.

Give MC3 to your 12-year-old, and like most every other 12-year-old, he'll be showing you how to use it in about a day or so.

I'd say MC3 is the perfect choice - and he'll be in a position to migrate to a pro level DAW when the time comes with minimum relearning.
