HS 2004 and USB Latency

I have been using HS2004 for some time, mostly midi with guitar and vocals mic'ed in through an SBLive soundcard. The sound was not so good on the audio so I invested in an Alesis Multimix 8 USB mixer. Sound quality is now great but the latency is crazy - so bad I can't even listen to a track right through without feeling I am in a bad dream. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks

Hi Jake. Off of the top of my head, without knowing any of the specs on your system, my first guess would be that you're connected through USB 1.0 type connection, which just isn't fast enough to avoid serious latency issues. Maybe it's not too late to switch to a Firewire mixer instead?

What driver mode are you using? Should be ASIO for lowest latency.

    Options>Audio

on the 1st page you'll find a latency slider. You'll have to adjust it, lowering the latency until it gets low enough without crackling the sound.

If that still doesn't work you'll have to dig into Windows and try to get your USB on its own interrupt.

USB 1.0 even thugh not recommended for audio still can handle several simultaneous tracks without issues (per my recollection and based on calculation for the data transfer rate is about 17 mono tracks). The issue might be related to the driver used and/or latency settings. ASIO isn't necessarily the best option for all cards, depends on how the drivers are written. I can have better latency performance with my card set to WDM mode than in ASIO 2.0

Thanks for all your replies guys. I think maybe it is time to upgrade my computer. I only have USB 1.0 and running an AMD 1.8gHz which is now about 4 years old. So no doubt my drivers are also pretty old. Busy working on a spec....... but any opinions on sound cards? I was looking at an E-MU 1212M. Does any have any experiences....

    I was looking at an E-MU 1212M.

Sounds great, works well in ASIO mode. Comes with a digital mixer in software that is very useful. Is a bit tricky to setup when you first get it, but is quite easy to use once you get the hang of Patchmix.

It comes with a bunch of DSP effects, but I don't use them. The onboard DSP is pretty low-powered (can't handle many effects at once), and I find plugins to be much easier to use and more flexible.
