Instrument amplifying

Hi, I am trying to record my bass and guitar into sonar ( the real instruments) and am finding they are not loud enough, amplified enough. I am plugging these instruments directly into my soundcard via analog inputs. What do I need to amplify these instruments more? Something like a direct box? Thanks.

Guitar and bass will sound a lot better if run into an amp, then you can mic up the amp and run that signal into Sonar. This way you will have a strong signal and a better sound. You might try normailising your current tracks or apply a maximiser to boost the volume.

Hi, could you explain what normalising the tracks is and how to apply a maximiser? I want to hear my playin through headphones, the amp will be too loud, thats why i thought a direct box might of been suitable. Thanks.

Yes! And/or something like a line6 pod or similar guitar effects proccesor!

Windows 7 Pro 64bit, Core i7 920, Asus p6td deluxe, Sonar X1c PE, Motu 2408 mk3, Apogee Mini DAC, 3x UAD-1, Digimax FS, Motu Microlite, MCU, Tranzport, Nocturn. And more...

Normalizing adjusts the peak volume of an audio file to around -0.5dB, all other audio in the track is boosted accordingly. This will make a quiet audio file louder but may also introduce noise. Also if you want to boost a recording or want to hear yourself in real time then a pod is a good option, you can also use a pluging like Guitar Rig or Amplitube in Sonar to boost the signal.

A DI or direct box will balance a signal and remove noise.

I´d go for a clean preamp,& add amp-simulation inside Sonar....
I prefer "real" miced sounds though.

    Windows 10 (LTSB) - i7 8700 - ASUS GTX1060 -16 GB Corsair Vengeance - Samsung SSD´s - Seagate HD´s - RME FF400 - & too many geetars & amps
