How to keep Sonar audio alive when Sonar looses focus?

When Sonar 4.0.4 looses focus, its audio turns off. How can I make Soanr keep the audio engine alive?

Thanks.

Try setting your PC to 'background services' in computer properties\advanced\performance\advanced

    Hi.
Thanks, but that made no difference.

    did you restart?

SONAR should, if your PC is of sufficient power and your latency is not set so low that you're maxing out your available processing, stay playing even when it loses focus.

    Hi.
Yes, I just rebooted. Still the same. Latency at 2.9, two audio tracks enabled for monitoring, input monitoring.

    Thanks.

Sorry, but your latency number means nothing without a machine spec.
Have you tried turning off input monitoring?
Unless you want to record your instrument and check your email at the same time.
What other program are you opening? If you try Media Player then it's likely SONAR will stop due to a conflict in owning the hardware.

Try setting this configuration param: (open the appropriate menus, tabs, etc.)

options -> audio -> advanced -> "Always open all devices"

I had this problem and I think this was the parameter that fixed it for me.

    Close but no cigar .
The option you're looking for is Share Drivers With Other Programs (under Options > Audio > Advanced). This must be UNTICKED.

How to keep Sonar audio alive when Sonar looses focus?

I use CPR to keep it alive, and a tether tied to focus keeps it hangin' on

(sorry, couldn't resist, no offence intended, just playin')

I concurr, in fact, Steve, I think it was you who solved this exact same problem for me before!

With all due respect to Paul, I love the suggestion that latency would affect it!

I think that Paul was envisaging a scenario where a foreground program was stealing too many CPU cycles for SONAR to continue working at low latency.

    Hi.

Sonar's audio engine shuts off if Sonar looses focus for ANY reason. If the screen blanker comes on it shuts it off. If I click the desktop it shuts it off. If Sonar is minimized it shuts it off. If a dialog from some other application or Windows pops up it shuts it off.

It seems that this is purely a Sonar thing.

Did you turn off the "Share Drivers With Other Programs" option yet?

    Hi Clay-

Does this happen with both ASIO and WDM drivers? IIRC, I had this problem when I tried the ASIO drivers for my card (Echo Indigo IO). I get better results with the WDM drivers anyway, but that's beside the point -- I don't have the problem you describe when I'm using the WDM drivers.

thats not a good thing to do ... sonar is not a background program ... i thought the same until i saw a message from ron kuper on this forum about it ...

Maybe they should reword this option. The current wording always struck me as counter-intuitive and initially led me to have the same problem as lahatte.

"Share drivers with other programs" implies (to a dimwit like me) that both Sonar and another program can access the audio card at the same time. It actually means (if I understand it right) that Sonar will temporarily release control of the audio card when you switch to another program ie sound in Sonar will stop when Sonar loses focus if this option is checked.

The entry relating to this in the help file doesnt really make it any better.

That was it. That seems just the opposite of the way it used to work. It doesn't mean what it says, obviously.

    Thanks.

Actually it is a great thing to do! ASIO and WDM drivers are background services, so setting your PC to prioritize background services will result in lower possible latency but I don't think it will help with the original posters problem. My guess would be the share audio drivers with other aps selector.

Forgive my ignorance, so are you saying that ticking this option does NOT share drivers with other programs?

"If the screen blanker comes on it shuts it off. "

    Hello,

Turn off the screen blanker (or any other screen saver) you don't need them and by using one you are asking for trouble.

    Best regards,
    George
