Mono tracks, volume issue

This is probably not a bug, but something I don't know about DAWs. If I am recording my guitar with two mics and have the left mic recording to one mono track, the the right mic to another mono, then play them back.........the volume is significantly higher.

If I play them seperately, they sound just like I want them to, volume-wise. But, when played together, they are maxing out my PathMix peak.

If I record both mics to one stereo track, it sounds fine as well.

Why?

My Setup:
Toshiba Satellite m55 series laptop
Pentium M 1.83
2 gigs of RAM.
2 rode nt5 condensors
emu 1616m

I wonder ... Panning Law - are you panning the two tracks, one left, one right? If so, your choice of panning law could have this effect if set to 0dB. Under Options, Audio, General Tab you can select a -3dB or -6dB panning law .... that might be your problem.
