Is Sonar 5 MFX Arpeggiator Different From P5's?
Hi folk, I'm running a little behind the curve here, so I was wondering if anyone had any info on the new MFX Arpeggiator that comes with Sonar 5 Producer Edition (I don't know if it comes with Studio Edition...). Aside from the obvious cosmetic appearances, I was wondering how it differs from Project 5 ver. 2's arp. Also was wondering if there's a way to import my arp patterns/presets from P5 into the Sonar version. Nick? René? Anyone? Got to do something until my copy of Dimension Pro gets shipped...

P5's arpeggiator is more advanced. As far as shapes go SONAR's ARP- MFX has only four shapes up down down up up up down down P5's built in arpeggiator has unlimited shapes since we can load our own pattern files as shapes! SONAR's ARP MFX might have a prettier face - but it lacks the depth and precision of P5's arpeggiator. One of my favorite techniques involves hooking up Dimension's Drum patches to P5's arpeggiator - with a low gate% + high rate.

yep - although I still it in Sonar more that P5 (I have been with Sonar for yearssssss). I mainly bought P5 for Dimension, but it is (P5) a nice program. I gotta be in the mood for it though (Dimension is a great program too - didnt what to imply otherwise!!) BTW - the MFX Arp in Sonar is in Studio edition as well.

I had been wondering if you could import midi sequences into the Sonar 5 Arp like you could in P5 ver. 2. Based on MM's reply I assume the answer is no . I didn't see any spec references on Sonar Studio Editio having the MFX arp. I wasn't sure... I still think it's pretty UberKewl that Sonar finally has one. -MDK

Cool!!! Now i just need to figure out how to install it...Can anyone help me with that?? Here is what the MFX text file says.. 2> Install / Uninstall ====================== How to install this MFX plug-in ------------------------------------ - copy the chordGenerator.dll file in your MFX plug-in folder. For example, for Sonar users, it will most likely be: C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared MIDI Plugins - as for all MFX plug-ins, it must also be registred. To do that, open an MS-DOS window and go into your plug-ins folder. For example, type: CD C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared MIDI Plugins then register the plug-in by typing: c:\windows\system\regsvr32.exe chordGenerator.dll If your system folder is different, type the correct path. I am on a windows XP, I followed those instructions to the TEE,...and no dice...any advice or light someone could shed on this would be greatly appreciated!!! -taylor

Now i just need to figure out how to install it...Can anyone help me with that?? Make sure that you're doing this in a MD-DOS window [Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Command Prompt], rather than the Run dialog, and that the syntax is followed exactly (no extra spaces, etc.). Or you can make life easy on yourself in the future, and go to TenCrazy. Download the Windows Shell Extensions here, and simply register and unregister any MFX or DX .dlls in a right-click menu. Then, show your appreciation to forum member Markleford Friedman for making all these neat plugins and utilities available for free.

B-ROCK. I only found one MFX plugin in the list you sent to me...when I search for an MFX arp. Did you know that SONAR doesnt support VST MIDI FX: SONAR does not support these. Do you know of any ARP MFX that will work with SONAR? Here is what I got cakewalk tech support... Hello Taylor, The best place to save new MFX plug-ins would be C:/Program Files/Cakewalk/Shared MIDI Plugins. This is not extremely important, but it may help keep things organized. The tricky part is registering them. Go to your Windows Start Menu and choose "Run". At the prompt, please type the following: regsvr32 "C:/Program Files/Cakewalk/Shared MIDI Plugins/Quantize.dll" NOTE: You will need to replace the "Quantize.dll" file name with the name of the file you are installing. A message should appear informing you that the DLL was registered successfully. After following these steps you will need to re-start SONAR. The new MFX plug will be available via Process|MIDI FX or from a MIDI tracks FX Bin. To answer your question regarding VST MIDI FX: SONAR does not support these. SONAR's VST implementation provides audio signal processing and MIDI input only. So you will need to stick with MFX plugs for any tasks that require a MIDI output. However, there are many free VST audio FX and synths available on the web. There's a great list of these here: http://www.sadglad.com/freevstplugins6.html. Hope this helps. Best Regards, Cakewalk Music Software Technical Support

I only found one MFX plugin in the list you sent to me... The Shell Extensions were just a way to easily register/unregister MFX and DX plugins in general. You had to go a little deeper. Look here. And, yeah, I did know a bit about Sonar, Project5, and the VST MIDI situation. Edit: Specifically looking for a MIDI arp only? Hmm ... I don't know if MIDILfo has folded or not. Tough to find; you'd have to search for it. Just get Project5. <g>
