My new DAW

Hi all,

I spent my last few days putting my new DAW together.
It´s not the one I wanted (AMD athlon X2) but it looks like this one is pretty solid:
Athlon64 4000+ on a Gigabyte K8NS Ultra-939 + 2 GB of RAM.

Had to move tmy 2 UAD-1 cards arroung the slots before I got them to use a free IRQ.
Now, each UAD-1 uses it´s own IRQ and nothing else is sharing IRQs. Nice!

Have installed the latest fireface800 drivers and updated to firmware revision 2.42
I have also installed sonar and updated it to 5.01 but haven´t tried worked with it yet.

I want to resolve every single issue first.
I have a few problems yet, and need to fix them:

1. Sometimes, my CPU fan stops turning during startup. Sometimes it re-starts when winxp
loads but sometimes it doesn´t. When it doesn´t if I reboot it will start again.
Since I don´t know if this is normal or not I don´t want to take the risk and leave to see if
it will re-start after sometime. Is this normal?

2. After installing winxp SP2 I get this annoying WINDOWS SECURITY CENTRE balloon saying
the firewall is OFF and that it can´t find an antivirus. How do I turn this OFF???

Thank you in advance

regards

Joni

You can disable the balloons in the registry. Using regedit, it's something like Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Security Center, and one of the strings has FirewallDisableNotify. Set the numeric value at the end of the string to zero.

I have no idea about the fans. Wishing you success with your new DAW.

I would replace the fan, but also check to see if there are any settings in the bios that have to do with cooling.
It also can be your power supply? I hope the MB. is good.

I have essentially the same mobo and the fan issue may have to do with the "Smart Fan" feature in the BIOS. It's possible the fan may have an issue but I think I've seen this and it's related to Smart Fan options. Make sure your running the Gigabyte utility called Easytune 5 which allows you to tweak what percentage strength the fan runs at based on temperature. For this feature to work Smart Fan has to be enabled in the BIOS.

    Good Luck!

the easiest way to stop the pop ups, is go to the control panel, and open up the security center.
On the left side in the resources pane, you will see at the bottom "Change the way Security Center Alerts Me"
select that and then then uncheck the firewall, AV etc.

Good luck with teh DAW , I would bet the fan issue is a "feature" that can be better managed in the bios

I use Athlon64 4000 for few month, with MSI K8N NEO2-F. This system is stable, and powerful with Sonar 5.0.1.
Like you, I was supposed to purchased an AMDx2. And I have chosen this processor, because I don't wants to be in compatibility problem...

So I'm really happy with this DAW.

Thank you thank you thank you....

The above links didn't work for me (the microsoft one told me to change a registry entry that didn't exist, and the other one told me that the 'change the way'... option was somewhere it wasn't. :-) They may be out of date.

BIOS should provide a screen that displays the current CPU temperature, updated in real-time. You can watch this for some period of time to see if the CPU gets too hot. Your mobo manual should tell you how hot is too hot.

    Good luck!

    Thank you all.

CH, your tip was magic. Thanks.

The fan problem seems to have stop. Too early to say for sure but till now it´s fine. I disabled the smart fan option in the bios.

    All good so far

Just a quick msg to tell you guys that my daw is now rock solid.
Projects that would make cpu hit 70% with high latency + now play hitting 40-50% with 1.2 latency. Great. Fireface800 rocks!

My projects with UAD-1 plugs work great. No errors so far.

Kust wanted to thank you guys once again for your support and time.

    regards
