Asus A8V Deluxe - IRQ clash

I'm running Sonar 5.0.1 under Windows XP Home (SP2) on an Asus A8V Deluxe based system (AMD X2 4800 with 2Gb memory). As I use a Motu 828 MkII, I installed a TI chipset PCI card (in PCI slot 4 - second from the bottom) as the Motu didn't like the VIA chipset firewire interface on the motherboard. The IRQ of the new TI chipset firewire is 19 and it is not shared. The VIA chipset firewire uses IRQ 16 and shares it with the AGP ATI graphics card.

I'd like to be able to reconfigure the system and move the VIA IRQ to an unused IRQ so that there is no possible interference with the AGP graphics card and therefore the system's performance.

Is that possible, as the VIA firewire interface is on the motherboard?

Obviously disabling the VIA firewire interface in the BIOS is one possibility and would stop contention. I'd prefer to keep the VIA firewire interface as it provides me with a port at the front of the PC for backups to an external hard drive. There doesn't, however, seem to be any way to change the IRQ setting on the VIA firewire interface.

Any system configurator gurus about?

TIA

If you have Plug N Play OS enabled in the BIOS, I think that you can change the IRQ in Device Manager. I don't see a way to adjust it in the BIOS on an A8N SLI - Deluxe.

your best bet is to proceed as follows :

    1) un-install your via fire wire drivers
    2) disable EVERY onboard device in the BIOS
    3) re-install the VIA fire wire drivers
    4) cross your fingers and hope it grabs an irq that been freed up by disabling all the other devices
    5) re-enable your other devices

    Tomek - Thanks.

But it feels like a very tortuous process with no garuantee of success.

If the VIA firewire is not being used, is the fact that it shares an IRQ with the graphics card likely to interfere with the performance of the graphics card?

    You are correct! -hehe

If the VIA firewire is not being used,
it will not interfear w/ the video, you should be fine.

    Take care,

To reconfigure IRQs if you can't change them in device manager (only Standard PC HAL will allow that):

Set your IRQs in the BIOS.

In MsConfig go to the boot.ini tab and under the advanced options select the /pcilock option and reboot.

Hardware IRQs are not assignable - there's a chart in the manual that shows which devices share which IRQs. (Mine's on page 2-16.) The only slot that has an unshared IRQ is PCI slot 4. The rest are all shared with something else. No amount of changing things in the BIOS or OS will change the IRQ assignments so they become unshared - unless you simply disable all but one of the devices sharing that IRQ.

I am using the on-board firewire - shared with the AGP port and two PCI slots (which are empty) and I'm not having any issues.

Have you actually have any problems because you have some shared IRQ'? Windows XP does fairly well with shared IRQ's and if you are using an ACPI HAL then you just can't avoid it unleess you limit the number of hardware devices that are enabled at one time. If you aren't having any problems then you should stop worrying about it (been there, done that) and just make some music.

Agree with Autist. Unless you actually encounter problems, it's not worth worrying about.

Thanks for your comments guys. They were helpful. I'll just disable the Via firewire interface at BIOS level.
