new to cakewalk and not progressing well!

Anybody who can help me out? I purchased Music Creator 2 with the thought of recording some song ideas I have.I installed the program on an older Dell Dimension L700 cx(about 4 years old) with a Celeron processor, with the sound card(SB Live! Wave Device)and Windows ME installed at the factory. The program installed o.k. I read through the tutorials for set-up and have not been able to get it to record. I have read down the forum list and tried some suggestions from that. Even my 15 year old son,who is pretty computer savy, can't figure out why it won't work.
Is the computer just too old or limited(without a Pentium processor) to do the job?It really confuses an older guy...

    Tell us a little more:
Can you play the tutorials - and get sound?
Have you gone through the tutorials?
How are you inputting the music? Is it thru a microphone or a midi keyboard?

Hi,thanks for responding.I get no sound while doing the tutorials.I was wondering about the drivers too(MME or Mwd,i think,I'm not sure which my computer has.I've lost the literature for this older unit.
I am not playing thru midi yet.I do not have a midi cable to hook up my Yamaha piano,so what I 'm using is audio with a microphone.I know that works because I plugged it into our newer Dell and got at least a poor quality recording thru the sound recorder.

well i guess the next question would be can you get ANY sound out of your computer....does it play any sound files, songs, videos etc.

Use the MME drivers, setup the sound card as the audio record and playback device and the midi devices as well.

As far as the system, Celeron is a tad slow, but if there is enought ram, then it should work. I had a PIII systen with 256 ram before and it really struggled. I particularly like AMD systems a good 2800 + XP system can be upgraded to very reasonable, again do not worry about that untill you get this one working and see what it needs.

Hi.Yes,the computer plays cd's and videos.I was able to plug in an electric guitar through an adapter and then into the sound card with a 1/8 stereo plug, and though I could not record a track to Music Creator,I WAS able to see the straight green line on the computer sound recorder register movement.(And I got the guitar to play quite loudly through the computer speakers, but the quality was low.Probably too much for the cheap little buggers to handle.Progress comes in same steps, huh?)
There was a very faint playback of sound when I hit playback...so something is getting through. The quality was terrible and the volume very low.I adjusted the volume controls all to the max;still nothing on Music Creator.
Also,I read that a condenser mic was superior for recording onto the program via the computer, but I have a Shure
Lo Z SM57 Dynamic mic and was hoping to use that for vocals. It is a good quality mic,I believe.Any comments on that anyone?
I used that mic on our newer computers sound recorder and the quality was better, but still WAY below what I would ever want anbody to listen to.
I guess a logical question would be,why don't I install the program on the newer Dell? The old computer is set up in an unused bedroom and much more convenient to use.If it comes down to giving up on Music Creator,I suppose I could try it on the newer unit as a last measure.

Go to options/audio and tell me what is in the record and playback boxes?

Also the condensor mike will not work unless you have a preamp with phantom power.

O.K. I went to Options/Audio. In the record box it says:SB LIVE! WAVE DEVICE.
In the playback box it says:SB LIVE! WAVE DEVICE.
The driver is set to MME 32 bit.Is that right or wrong?

Thanks. So,is the SB LIVE WAVE DEVICE the actual sound card? And if so,is it a poor quality unit?I looked into a Soundblaster card at a local computer shop, but the only one they had came with a bunch of games and was $150.00.
I mean,I would like to go further with this, but if I start getting into a lot of expenses on add-ons,wouldn't I be better off getting a dedicated unit like a Tascam or a Fostex digital unit with multi track recording capability?

NEWS ALERT!!! NEWS ALERT!!! I have a RECORDING!!! I,m not sure what I did.I went to audio advanced recording/playback and told it to share with other programs. Could that have been the problem? The sound quality is even pretty good.So the adventure continues...

The issue with sound blaster cards is that they generally have lower quality Ad/DA convertors. But they still are pretty good, but not Pro level. As far as tascam or fostex units, they do not have the mixing capability of a computer system.
