midi echo mode

Is there a way to force the MIDI echo mode to NONE as a default? Otherwise, I have to goto Options->Project... to set the echo mode for each file I open.

The default echo mode prevents me from playing along with a midi file on my synth, as the keys I press sends a message back on a channel different than the one I am playing on.
