question with xlr imputs

ok i have a creative card right now. yes yes i know i hate it too. but i did buy it for gaming. its been in the last year or two i have gotten very serious with recording and it aint cutting it! my question: how would i record say a drum set with maybe 10 or 12 xlr imputs . is there something out there like a apogee thats less expensive and easier to use (less hardware componants) or should i opt for an onyx system with the board and a firewire out? must have phantom power for that overhead. some feedback and ideas would be great. (sound card suggestions too!!!!) thanks

    You need a heavy duty sound card with multiple inputs. Something like the M-Audio1814 FW or the Presonus Firepod, MOTU Traveler, Echo Audio Fire, Emu 1820M.

    Happy shopping!

    I don't remember seeing any sound cards with that many peramps built in. There are some sound card with a bunch of inpus. At the low end I think you can run two M-Audio delta 1010s that would give you 16 analog inputs. MOTU makes the 24i that has 24 in and 24 out. You would still need preamps for the microphones so maybe a mixer with direct outs on each channel.. that would be handy for monitoring also.

    The Onyx is worth a try, some folks have had problems with the firewire drivers but if you could get it to work it would be a clean setup, only one small wire to the computer. If the firewire card for the Onyx didn't work out then you could get a sound card and just use the Onyx for it's preamps and monitoring, it would not go to waste.

    1820m = $500
    Behringer ada8000=$200=8 preamps connected to the 1820m via ADAT.

    Total 10 mic ready inputs
    6 Line level waiting for your favorite pre-amp or amp-sym

    no hardware mixer required.

    The main difference is that with ADAT you have to get sample rate clock one direction or the other. It's best to use the sample rate clock your sound card so you would need one with ADAT out or better yet Word Clock out. Now you have two cables to deal with as where with firewire there is just one and it's bi-directional and error checking, ADAT is not. ADAT is also limited to 48k if you want all 8 channels.
