How do I get my Photo shrunk to 10kb?

Hey all,

If this is the wrong place to ask this - I apologize in advance.

I have a picture taken with an 8 meg camera that I would like to use as my avator - but I can't seem to shrink it small enough to be accepted by the site - Any suggestions on techniques or software to help?

Thanks!

I use Adobe Photoshop. Use the File - Save For Web. Then on that page I can make all the adjustments I want before saving it to disk.

.......And no need to apologize for asking a good and valid question.

You can shrink size with Microsoft Office Photo editor if you have MS Office. Change the picture size and resolution until it gets small enough. That's how I do it.

    Thanks Guys,

I tried shrinking it using Arc Soft Photo Studio - I shrunk it to the dimensions that the forums wants (no larger than 45x45) but no matter how small I made it, the size of the file never got below 28k. I need it to be 10k to upload.

    Am I out of luck?

    Curios.

check the format. 28k is pretty massive for a 45x45 picture. if you can save it as a jpeg you can lower the quality until the size gets down to 10k. if the pic isn't a photo (like the default forum icons) you should consider using .gif format and lowering the number of colors. gif goes up to 256 but you don't usually need that many.

    You can get it here.

    try picassa from google.

    http://picasa.google.co.uk/

or gimp2 - which you can google for which is prolly overkill but a very very good photo editing program.

    Kind regards

jpg is prolly the best for small filesizes, you jus have to watch the compression amount, even the smallest dims can produce larger filesizes jus with (or without) the compression on the image.
if it is like a 50x50 image or smaller, gif is likely better. I have several 50x50 gifs under 8kb.

you should edit that so spam crawlers don't harvest it off this site. wickerman_band at yahoo dot com might be a little safer.

Thanks to Wickerman - I now have a correctly sized picture.

I thought I loaded it up on my profile so that it would show up on my posts - but they are still blank?

How do I get it to load with each of my posts?

It's something that you can only accomplish when you have the knowledge, encounter and right tools (ie. digital cameras, contacts, tripods, etc). There are, however, some guidelines that even newbies can do to generate a better image/photo using a dSLR electronic camera. Those guidelines are:

IMO gif-format is best for ultra-small files. I remember struggling with my avatar in PhotoShop using jpg, but could not get low enough. A pro friend hinted gif is better.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
