strange noob problem
Hi all.. I'm recording audio in sonar and having the strangest problem. My waveforms display properly, but the play head is going twice as fast as my waveforms are telling me it should. I'm a noob, so it could be something simple. If anyone knows of a solution, your help is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi rhythmdev and welcome to this forum. I don't think yours is a 'strange noob' problem but maybe it's a strange 'noob problem'. The vertical line that moves in play mode is a representation of what Sonar calls the 'Now Time', which can be displayed in a number of formats. I assume this is what you mean by the play head. If you are saying that the speed does not correspond to the sound of your waveforms, then I doubt it but maybe I have misunderstood what you mean. Don't forget there are two lines: one in the clips pane (track view) and one in the navigator view at the top. They move at different speeds because of the scale. Have you tried the Process-Audio-Extract Timing menu item? This can help establish a rhythm from your audio by analysing the peaks in your track. (Select the track first.)

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Now that I have the terminology straight, I can say the Now time line that scrolls from left to right during playback and recording is moving twice as fast as the actual pace of the song. For instance, I have a song at 120 bpm and the playhead moves at the speed of 240 bpm. I tried synching the track to an audio file like you suggested. It didn't seem to help the problem. If you have any other ideas, they're welcome. Thanks.

Hi, If you don't have any audio tracks (i.e. not even empty ones), just MIDI tracks, you can set the Tempo Ratio to double the speed. (I have never done this because I always have audio tracks.) Is that what you clicked on? The button with a depiction of what is supposed to be a pendulum but with a number in? My Sonar 4 manual covers tempos on pages 241 -- 250. Switch on the metronome and count the beats to satisfy yourself that you are getting the right BPM. If you're in 4/4 time make sure that the first beat lands at the beginning of every number at the top of the clips pane (time ruler) and count 15 or 30 secs worth of beats. Do the sums and satisfy yourself that Sonar is doing what it says. Otherwise I am stuck. Are you using groove clips? In fact, if you are still stuck please could you be more precise about exactly what you're doing. When you say you have a song at 120bpm and it plays at 240bpm is that because although you recorded it at 120bpm but Sonar's project tempo is set to 240bpm? Regards, Togo

Hi. Thanks again for replying to this very odd problem. Okay, my project tempo is 120 bpm. I'm using two recorded audio files. No groove clips, no midi, just pure audio files. The metronome is dead on. The now time line or play head is simply moving at twice the speed of the actual playback. I'm at a loss. I've gone through and looked for problems with my hardware (M Audio mobile pre, AMD 64 processor on NForce motherboard, 1.5 gigs of RAM). Anymore advice or help is appreciated. Thanks...

ORIGINAL: rhythmdev The metronome is dead on. The now time line or play head is simply moving at twice the speed of the actual playback. If the metronome is dead on, I just can't understand how the now-time line can be moving at twice the speed of the project tempo. Are you sure the metronome and project tempo are different from the speed at which the line moves? (It's not a zoom or time-ruler scale thing, is it?) Wait a minute, I'll just call out for some other help -- OI! CAN ANYONE ELSE HELP THIS DUDE?

Is the audio playing back at an octave(s) higher than recorded?

If you were to listen to just over half of your recorded material, the now time would be off to the right of any clips? 20x7

The now time line or play head is simply moving at twice the speed of the actual playback. Did you record the two audio files in this project yourself, or are they from another source? If the latter, are you sure the meter or time signature is the same for both -- ie., are you really hearing the metronome count individual beats accurately against the audio, or is it just "in time"? Could you be hearing "1&2&3&4&" when the project is really counting "1234 (2)234"? That's the only reason I can think of for the transport to be moving exactly twice as fast. -Susan

I am having the exact same problem! I've used sonar 2.0 and many previous versions without this problem. But just as you say, the recording and metronome come out fine, but the 'now time' line is speeding on ahead at an unknown pace that doesn't sync with either the audio or the metronome. I am only using audio, audio metronome, no MIDI at all. can't figure this one out and no help topic seems to address this at all. If anyone finds out PLEASE post that in this thread. thanks.

This may sound stupid but...how about your zoom reference ..Are you zoomed in to much on your track views?
Gigabyte I5 , Sonar x3 producer,RME FF400, , Events 20/20, Yamaha NS-10m studio. What?

After four or five hours and several cups of coffee, I did something rather basic. I visited MAudio's download page and downloaded the latest version of the MobilePre drivers (fall 2005 i think) and what do ya know? No more 'now time marker moving faster than the speed of sound' problems. All hunky dory like it should be. Don't ask me how or why or what, but this solved the problem. You might try running a demo (that three part funky thing) with your onboard audio card as opposed to an outboard or application specific card. I ran it with the laptop sound card and saw that my prob was with the MAudio interface. Why? Absolutely no idea why that would cause a problem with the display. Also, make sure to be running to an audio specific drive if you can. Hope it works out for ya.
