Dual-core upgrade not running any faster than single???

I just upgraded my AMD 64 3000+ to a AMD 64 X2 3800+. The installation went fine, and my MB (Giga-byte K8SN-939) BIOS has been flashed and should be able to run dual-core.

XP seemed to take the change fine and is identifying the processor by name and speed correctly as: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ 2.01 Ghz, 1.00 GB of RAM.

Yet, my Sonar PE5 is seems to be running about the same speed and maintaining the same approximate CPU load as pre-upgrade.

Why might this be happening? Is there some change in Sonar settings that is needed to activate dual-core? If not, is there any way to verify through XP that the dual-core is doing what it's supposed to?

Thanks.

Did you resintall or do a repair install of XP when you upgraded? If not, Windows is still running the ACPI or Standard HAL. You need to do a repair install and hold F8 IIRC when it asks for additional drivers and then select the ACPI Multiprocessor HAL. You can tell what HAL is being used by right-clicking on My Computer, select "Properties", then "Device Manager". Now click on the "+" next to Computer. If it doesn't say "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" XP is not running dual core. HTH.

Thanks, but actually it was a lot simpler than that. I didn't click "Use Multiprocessing Engine" under Audio Options.

Now that I have, this thing is amazing! Consistently almost half the CPU usage. I put through my heaviest projects and they're only 50% at most. For $350 CAD, worth every cent ...

err.. you're very quick to discard Andy's advise, I strongly recommend you go back and revisit it. If you just popped the new cpu in, you're still only running on one core. Even with the "Multiprocessing" option selected- which is probably just using the hyperthreading feature of the cpu.

No I don't think so there's no Hyperthreading since it's an AMD. It seems you're already ok but http://forums.amd.com/index.php?showtopic=64936 have a look at this. Also: rightclick on the Task Bar -> Task Manager -> Performance Tab. Might be of interest.
