Which Overhead Mics?

because we can now afford it andbecause we want to find out if it really makes the difference we are about to purchase

Vintech 473 Pre
Apogee Mini-Me Converter
Electrovoice RE-20
Sennheiser 421
Neumann U87

We are looking to find out what we need for overhead mics.
We already have the AKGD112 for Kick and we decided to go a little more high end with the RE20. I am looking at the AKG C1000. Is this more of a live mic? What is most commonly used in studio? I want tried tested and true. Studio trusted and I want to be able to buy a record and hear these things. Thanks everyone!

The AKG C1000 is the worst mic they ever made, I have never found a use for it on anything, an MXL is better then that thing. My favorite overhead mics are AKG C414 with the low cut on and pad (only if needed). Other good choices are Shure SM81 or for a more open airy sound AKG C451b (only if you have a good sounding room !) or for more of a pre EQed sound with a little more focus a Crown CM700 pair... wish I handn't sold mine, the CM700 is one of the most under rated mics ever.

Ya know what's funny - you can use almost anything and get good results. I think back on all the recordings I've done (as both engineer and artist) not to mention live sound and I can say without reservation there is no standard. I've seen all manner of mics used as overheads - everything from SM57's to Neumann U87's. One of the best that I remember personally (it stuck in my mind all these years) came from a pair of those PZM mics (I don't remember which brand they were now - maybe Crown) but they sounded great. The problem is they need to placed against something like a ceiling tile or something reflective.

I've seen a lot of those Oktava MK12's used as overheads. I tried 'em here in my studio and wasn't impressed though. But I love those mics for other things.

I tend to favor lightweight pencil style mics for no other reason than they are easier to mount on standard mic stands. Anything approaching a large diaphragm condenser needs a pretty hefty stand to prevent tipping over. Ohhey's suggestions are good ones. I'll go with him on this one.

not bad not bad - the 414's are great mics - if the price tag doesn't scare you then go for it. You will not be disappointed. And those mics can be used for many different purposes. They hold their value real well too.

I wouldn't call it a "deal" money wise but you can't go wrong with those. Even if you didn't like them (but you will) you could get most of your money back on e-bay even years from now.
