Ya know what's funny - you can use almost anything and get good results. I think back on all the recordings I've done (as both engineer and artist) not to mention live sound and I can say without reservation there is no standard. I've seen all manner of mics used as overheads - everything from SM57's to Neumann U87's. One of the best that I remember personally (it stuck in my mind all these years) came from a pair of those PZM mics (I don't remember which brand they were now - maybe Crown) but they sounded great. The problem is they need to placed against something like a ceiling tile or something reflective.
I've seen a lot of those Oktava MK12's used as overheads. I tried 'em here in my studio and wasn't impressed though. But I love those mics for other things.
I tend to favor lightweight pencil style mics for no other reason than they are easier to mount on standard mic stands. Anything approaching a large diaphragm condenser needs a pretty hefty stand to prevent tipping over. Ohhey's suggestions are good ones. I'll go with him on this one.
