MP3 Encoding- To Sonar or Not to Sonar...

Hey all!

I am a longtime Sonar user, still using 7 Pro until I trust that the exterminators have finished their job going through X1.

I use the encoder that I purchased through Cakewalk, which I understand is french in origin, thus pronounced "Lam-ay".  It worked all right for the past couple of years, but just recently has instead followed the english pronunciation and it is now "Lame".  The sound quality sounds like I pulled out an old cassette tape that had been baking on a car seat for the past 15 years or so.  Changed nothing in equipment or workflow, it just started sounding awful.  Any fixes would be cool, but I also have long thought about a separate free standing program that I could simply throw .wav files into and convert it into a good sounding mp3 at various bit rates.

I have worked with Sound Forge, but it's probably got a lot more features than I would use, and is therefore more money than I would probably need to spend.  Im uploading lots of stuff to the internet and I'd like to get as close as I can to trusting that what I hear out of my monitors in .wav will be a reasonable facsimile when compressed.

Your experience and suggestions will be, as always, greatly appreciated!

thanks

That's funny. No its LAME pronounced "laym". It stands for "LAME Ain't an Mp3 Encoder."

What bit rate are you using? You should be using 128 or higher.

I use Nero to burn CDs and it has a very good (well I think so anyway) mp3 converter.  I'm still using a really old version and as far as I know all the newer versions only got bloated with features I don't need.

Anyway ... it serves dual purpose for me ... I don't much care for trying to burn CDs from Sonar nor exporting as MP3.  So I always export as WAV and then use Nero for burning CDs and converting MP3 (and other formats).

My MP3's all sounded like crap when I exported from Sonar and used the "Entire Mix" setting. Using "Main Outputs" works good. HTH

    Hipatitis (n): Terminal coolness.
