Audio Driver

I'm wondering if I haave the proper set up for my sound card usinc mc3. Im using ASIO driver and the audio bit depth is showing 24 and is grayed out the file bit depth is set at 24 and the sampling rate is at 44,100. I guess my question is should I use 16 of 24 bit depth and 44,100 or 48,000 sampling rate? Thanks in advance
Cheers Dave.....

Dave - if you are not experiencing any problems, then the settings you have is fine.

ASIO requires you to use 24bit sampling, that's why it's greyed out. If you want to use 16bit, you'll need to use WDM orMME drivers - but I wouldn't advise using that unless you are having PROBLEMS with the ASIO set up. 24 bit sampling also gives you a lot more resolution and more 'headroom' for mixing. Stick with 24 bit if you can.

file bit depth at 24 gives better resolution on the file, but makes the file size larger. Again, if you're not having any problems with 24 bit, then use it. Sampling rate of 44100 will give you a CD quality sampling rate. There are different views on using 48kHz, then mixing down to 44.1kHz VS. using 44.1kHz from the begining. The difference you get is probably quite minimal, but again, CD quality WAV files HAVE to be mixed down to 16bit, 44.1kHz, so when you mix your songs down to WAV files for putting on a CD (assuming that's what you want to do), you'll have to change the settings to get it to CD settings.

A faster sampling rate will give you LESS latency, but it will increase the file size.

I have an M-Audio Delta 44 using ASIO drivers and I record at 24bit, 48kHz sampling with 24bit file resolution, then I mix down to 16bit, 44.1kHz for my WAV files. That way the 48kHz gives me less latency than the 44.1kHz, but it's not 96kHz where I more than DOUBLE the file size during sampling.

Actually you can use 16 or 24 with ASIO, but all setting must be entered from the Cards applet window, once ASIO is set up then the driver controls what the program parameters are. and not the other way around as with other types of drivers. i always suggest using 24 bit as that give you the headroom to get a very nice signal, most of the audio recording i do is done in 32 bit float i never get digital clipping that way. As far as 48 or 44.1 as the sampling rate, while higher is better, there is not that much difference, now 88.2 or 96 there will be a bit of difference, just get the cleanest recording you can and work from there.

Thanks to Robo and Beagle for your expert advice, I now have a better understanding of yet another question. I will keep my settings of 24 bit and 44,100 again thanks for your time.

I have almost the same setup as you, the same computer CPU and the same sound card, and almost the same mixer (602) I just have more ram 512, i strongly suggest upping that as XP takes almost 256 by itself.
