Sonar hasn't been told what midi ports to use. If you have a soundcard with midi on it, you can select it by clicking Options>Midi devices. If you don't have a midi option, you can still hear sound from softsynths and audio......

Have you tried Options->MIDI Devices to see what's available to you?

Do you have some other program open that might be hogging your MIDI Device(s)?

Have you checked Tutorial 1 - The Basics in your manual ... that takes you through step by step.

Other than that .... not knowing what you have, there's not much more I can say really.
