external sound card

I just bought a new laptop, and I was wandering what would be a good external sound card to use that wont cost me fortune. My friend is on here all the time and when I asked him, he told me to come here. Im kind of new to sonar, and recording on my laptop, and I was just wandering what you all would recommend

Thank you for your time,

I got a m-audio firewire solo and it works like a charm. Beware of USB1.1 devices saying that they're 2.0 compatible. While they are compatible they are not really USB 2.0 in functionality, therefore they only working at USB1.1 speeds and only perform at lower mpbs and don't have as good a processing power as Firewire or USB2.0 has.

I guess we should know how many inputs with preamps you need though :)
