All things being equal, what should I buy?

I have a little bit of money to throw at the studio. Lots of places to go with it... about $1k just kind of laying around right now, and no bills due. I keep the studio money completely separate from our household money. Studio money pays for studio toys, and the taxes for the studio income itself. Thoughts I have:

1. A new rolling chair. Mine is comfy, and doesn't make me sweat, but it's a high back, and I know I'm getting reflections off the back of it. Lower lumbar support is important to me. thoughts? I probably sit in this thing between 30-50 hours in any given week.

2. A couple new mics. I'd REALLY like a ribbon of some kind, but you're just kinda hitting the "entry-level" ribbon mic at this price point. Also, whenever possible I buy two of anything, which means I'd be looking at two $500 mics instead.

3. Mic pre's. I can ALMOST squeeze out the price of a Grace 201, but I'd rather get something that actually ADDS something to the sound. My pre's are fine for staying out of the way, and my Focusrite ISA 110's are FANTASTIC. I'd love something that can complement them, and have "flavor" if ya know what I mean.

4. Some kind of coloring compressor. I'd LOVE to own a pair of Distressors, but again, out of my price range.

Below is what I currently own (extensive list to follow). What would you add to this list if you had $1k to throw at something?

You're already pretty well-equipped, and as you indicated, $1k isn't enough to buy a big jump in quality over most of the stuff you have. I would look first for things that need upgrading that might be low-glamour but that can make a big difference.

I don't know what your situation is like in this regard, but having stuff like plenty of high-quality stands and cables, extra drum heads and guitar strings, a rattle- and hum-free space to work in, good lighting and climate control, good backup drives, plenty of headphones with a good distribution system, and so on all make a really big difference from the client's perspective.

These kinds of things seem often to often get short shrift in smaller studios, where you may see the guy sitting there with some $1000 speakers rattling and sliding around a second-hand particle-board desk and a $2k preamp sitting on a bookshelf under a flourescent light.

I think most studio operators probably have a dozen things that bug them every time they use them, but they never really think about replacing when they're flipping through gear catalogs. If that's you, then this is the perfect time to show some tough love to your gear lust.

On the other hand, if you're all in good order and repair, then I'd say save the money, and wait until something comes along that's really going to make a big difference, either when some piece of gear breaks down, or when a new client or project requires something you hadn't thought of before. If you really need a new toy, buy a cool instrument, like an upright bass or a flugelhorn or some old gold-flake organ.

    That's my $.02, anyway.

    Cheers.

Life has a way of showing you what's needed.
In a week or two or three, an unseen need will arise and you will be ready for it.

The next client may insist on a Neumann 103. No problem. You will be ready..

Sit on it for a while. Needs will come looking for you.

Or you could, in fact, buy a viking a beer. Great PR value there.

    Yep:

All very good suggestions. We custom built our desk, and it tain't goin' nowheres. It's built into the walls of the house. No rattles to speak of.

Stands/cables/etc: Doing pretty well there as well, although it's something I'm always thinking about. I could use some more all-metal boom stands... so maybe we'll look into that.

Flugelhorn: Just about coughed up a lung when I saw that! Very funny!

Guess we'll just sit on it for a bit. I was really hoping somebodied pipe in and say "XYZ company has this great new widget that EVERYBODY loves! You can get two for about $950!"

    Course, that didn't happen... yet?

I'll give it a try Laz.

Sebatron dual channel. Right at $1000. Big, fat, warm, beautiful. A grand gets you 2 channels and it's fantastic. I used one in the studio I recorded in about a year ago and it transformed my sound. If you can get your hands on one, I'd be seriously jealous. It's the very first thing on my list. Bar none. If you have some clean channels, this is THE complement to them.

My God, man. There is always some great new widget that everybody loves these days, and you can usually get ten of them for $950!

15 years ago, it used to be that there was always some $1200 classic staple that everybody needed; these days, it's some newfangled reissue/knockoff or plugin version that costs $100, and it'll be twice as good and half the price next month. There has never been a better time to have money to spend on this stuff, and there has never been a better time to hold on to your dough.

The fact that one can even have a legit discussion about which $200 mic sounds most like a U47, or which $80 plugin sounds most like boutique compressor "X" is proof that a man with a grand is simply spoiled with options these days. And it just gets better every day, so there's no reason to hurry.

Although I must say I like the idea of buying beer. The biggest client draw I ever bought wasn't a telefunken preamp, it was a keg cooler in the lounge...

    Cheers.

i hear creative's new soundblaster awesominity 9.1 is coming out with 43 i/o ports and a "make it teh r0x0rz!!!1!!" button (which of course, turns any mix which happens to be "teh sux0rz" into "omgrotfl teh b0mbz!!!!~!11!" in 5.2 seconds or less).

it seems this new card will make any song 35% better immediately by triangulating the mean coefficient of vector-based floating-point compression into parallel sockets optimized for the all new ipod micro (which cannot actually be seen and holds 40% more songs than the other leading brand), which coincidentally happens to be the same method jack bauer used in season 3 to find a columbian drug dealer's daughter's friend's uncle's dalmation's shock collar. thus the awesominity prevents terrorism, and so not buying it is un-american.

luckily, it happens to be available for $475, so you can get two for $950 (plus shipping and handling and any applicable sales tax). creative's sales group has teamed up with the national security agency, so all you need to do is call a random person and place your order.

(i'm going to bed now...and i really do love 24, but haven't seen season 5 yet, so don't mention anything about it thanks...)

    Very true...

    I completely agree...

Although I must say I like the idea of buying beer. The biggest client draw I ever bought wasn't a telefunken preamp, it was a keg cooler in the lounge...

Somehow, I find that completely believable! We tried to figure out someplace to put one when were designing the studio, but there just ain't no space... Ah well.

Even though there's a smoldering hole in my pocket, I guess I'll hold on for a bit. Thanks for the advice, everyone!

Nah. If I were to buy a new sound card, it'd be an RME Hammerfall DSP9652, or something else along those lines. I already have 24 channels of ADAT in/out conversion, so it'd just be a matter of 6 lightpipe cables to have 24 tracks in/out for use with Sonar.

It's on the list... just don't know if I'm ready to trust a computer for tracking and overdubs quite yet! lol

i'm no creative fan that's for sure. it's really amazing though the kind of sound you can get with "cheap" pro cards.

i actually try to be a minimalist with my gear - never buying something that i don't really really want. it's cheaper but i can no longer look at the musician's friend magazines... it's just too painful. =)
