    Pete,
First of all, just as a courtesy of "netiquite" you should turn off ALL CAPS - typically that means you're YELLING at somone.

You do not have to have a powered mixer unless you need phantom power for your microphone. You didn't say what kind of mic you have, so i don't know if you need a powered mixer or not. In fact you don't have to have a mixer at all, but they certainly come in handy for a lot of reasons.

A hissing sound could be caused by a lot of things and we'll need to know more about your hardware before we can start to help. what type of mic do you currently have? are you plugging your output from your mixer into the Microphone input or the LINE input of your sound card?

I would not recommend to anyone using CW products to buy a USB microphone. I've tried helping people get them to work in CW products and we simply could not get it to work. Someone on this board once said they got it to work, but didn't ever respond when I asked them what they did, so I don't know how to make them work. they're designed more for 'teleconferencing' and not for recording vocals in a DAW.

I have tried to connect using a mixer through the line in jack and can hear everything through the mic but it does not register on VU meter, nor does it record. MC 2003, how do I record with line in? RFM1

You can hear everything thru the mic? I'm sure that's not what you meant, but you'll need to explain what you really do mean. You can hear the mic thru the mixer? How have you got your mixer connected? What do you have as an INPUT on your track that you are arming? Do you have the input echo on?

Well when I connect through a mixer into the line in jack, I hear all the sounds I want, but they do not register on the VU meter, and it doesn't record. I am using the output of the mixer to the line in jack of the sound card. SoundMAX is the driver for the SC, and I have no effects on the track. Input is set for Soundmax digital intergrated audio as well as the out. I have noticed there is less hiss, and better sound quality in line in rather than the mic input, so I really want to be able to use it.

okay, after more experimentation, I have determined that although I can hear everything loud and clear before I arm for recording, once I arm the track, I still hear it, but I have to turn the volume way up on the mixer then I barely get a sound on the recording, and it sounds like it is breaking up. It records tapping noise and such but not tones. Can barely hear voice.

My absolute favorite kind of post. 'Never mind, I got it fixed.'

To All who post and then find their own answers - why not POST back what you did so that others can learn from you????

Maybe the next response to a question on the forum should be

"Never Mind. Just turn the blue button to infinity [but not beyond]. That way you'll figure it out yourself."

Go to volume control select options, record, and make sure line in is selected and volume is UP. there was something else but I can't find it again and will let you know when I do.

Allright, I am using a Realistic mixer, a dynamic hardwire mic, and the same happens when I use my vocopro wireless mic, the comp is a compaq evo, 1.7 gig processer, soundmax digital audio is the driver for the soundcard. No matter what I do, either through the mic port or line in, I get a loud hiss, like an old tape recording or something. It is not clean audio. I am usind the WDM drivers, and turn the trim all the way down, and still get the hiss. Please help. I have to make demo CD's to send to Churches for our evengelism team, and I want them to be better than what I have so far.

Oh Yeah, even without the mixer i get the hissing noise, and I have to go through the mic port and it is more of an electronic noise then. but with the mixer, no electronic noise just a hiss
