IK Multimedia - Cool Stuff

Just checking out some of their stuff - the Ampeg bass plug, the T Racks, The new reverb plug. They seem to be a happening company. Any opinions?

I do not know about happening , but certainly happened. TRackS has been the staple mastering plug in for quite some time now.

I've used Amplitube and T-Racks from them in the past. But unfortunately I found that their tech support was abysmal. And I mean "worse than NI" abysmal. Yes dealing with them was THAT bad. I always get a chuckle out of reading the complaints over on NI's board about how non-existent the tech support is. Oh if they only knew.....

Several months ago, they offered me a discounted upgrade to Amplitube 2. Amplitube was good enough for me to consider giving IK another chance. But then I found out that their latest products have gone the dongle copy-protection route. That killed the deal for me.

Hmm....staple mastering plug? Well, I dunno about that. I would say these are probably more of a staple as far as mastering plugs go.

Can't say much about Sonik Synth, did a little of everything, nothing spectacular. NI Kontakt 2 crushes Sampletank in every way. Not even close.

Amplitube looks alright. It's gotta be better than that disaster of an amp modeler that comes with Sonar, can't think of the name of it at the moment.

This new Stealth plug thing from IK? Oy. It's stuff like that that makes it really difficult to take their whole product lineup seriously.

Very true, I should actually rephrase that and say that it has been the staple mastering plug in for many amateur/semi-pro musicians for quite a few years now. Waves are a bit more pro end , personally I use Izotope Ozone.

SampleTank sucks - I don't update it anymore.

    T-Racks rocks - I'll always update it.

hmmmm....I love my SampleTanks. I just have the ST2 LE version but the orchestral strings library still is my go-to sound patch for all things orchestral (sorry Dim Pro).

What about this? Does Izotope have better customer support? Their products look pretty cool, too. Their mastering suite is cheaper than T-Racks by about $100 bucks.

BTW could you use one of these mastering suites on just one track, say drums? I realize you would have to make your drums an audio track, but that would be okay. Maybe that would be a quick answer to "pumping up" my drums, like I'm always talking about.

There is no reason that you cannot use the mastering suites on only one track as an insert. The real question is why? I do use the Izotope for for the spectrum analyser to look at the content of the track, then I will use the sonitus EQ on it once I have a good idea what parts I want to boost/cut. Using it on every track will bring my computer to its knees very quickly. Of course there is always the freeze track option. You do not have to make your drums an audio track if it was a soft synth in the first place though as long as its an audio signal and not a "true" midi instrument.

As to the support, I truely have no idea since I have had no cause to contact them. If you want you can download the time limited demo from Izotope to try it out. As far as I remember there are no other limits on the demo.

I can't comment on their tech support, but I purchased Phatmatik Pro through a licence transfer and they dealt with it quickly...seeing as there was no immediate financial incentive for them, it bodes well if they handle all their support in the same prompt manner.

I like IK for sound quality and features, but stability seems to be a problem. I stopped using my IK plugs that require hardware or dongle authentication. Now I hardly ever have problems. YMMV.

Izotope's tech-support is truly top class. When I purchased spectron there was no serial number in the box as there should have been. W/in 1 e-mail and an afternoon I had a serial #. Completely sweet and no hassle.

    have a good one

Their copy protection seems to be a bit extreme. Apparently you need a dongle even to run the demo of their Classik Reverb.

This is pretty much the same for anyone using the Syncrosoft protection scheme...the same applies to Arturia's recent Prophet 5 emulation. Which is, I suppose, slightly better than some other Syncrosoft using companies who don't provide a demo at all.
