Ok, guys! Let's see what you say...

I'm kind of nervous about this, but here goes...

Here are some of the songs that I've been working on for the past 3 months (there are others but I can't post them). I think they get progressively better, but the first one (two) has a definite attraction due to it's nature.

these are all christian songs. only 1 is not public domain and I have a Compulsory License on it.

Tell me what you think. I do want constructive criticism, but be gentle with me!

I listened to your cover of If I Stand (which is one of my all-time favourite songs to perform, not to meantion my absolute favorite songwriter). Not a bad job! It appears you are limited now more be equipment than actual skill. The drums are WAY too busy, keep it light and just keep the rhythm (listen to Jars of Clay's version for an idea). I'd pull the vocals back a couple db, maybe less than that actually. Also, I'd replace your piano sound with something a little more prosounding, I can run it through NI's Akoutik Piano if you wish.

    All in all, good job!

Thanks, Joe. This song was my first attempt at adding drums and I am NOT a drummer. I knew they weren't my best work! I'll work on that. Thanks for the input.

I thought that there were several places I might need to back off at least on the harmony vocals, so I'll look at that as well.

I used one of Sampletank's free pianos on this one. You've got Akoustik? Nice. Send me an email and I'll send you the MIDI tracks.

    thanks again for the input!

Actually i have always liked the free piano from Sampletank, when i get home i will listen with headphones but it just might be a need to give the piano track some personal attention. Actually after another listen i do not think the sample patch is the problemat all, it is just the midi track is a bit stiff, as most midi is.

I am certain that the MIDI track may need some more "humanizing". I didn't play this piece myself but I scanned it in from sheet music and then edited it from that point. When you do that, all of the notes are played at the same velocity and exactly on the correct time and all of the durations are the same for each note type.

I have edited the MIDI enough to change a lot of those things, but I'm sure it could use some more. I think it would have been easier just to learn to play it instead of doing it this way! This is a hard song to play (at least for me), so I took a shortcut!

I use premade midi all the time, and it is a great way to get work done for those who do not play all instruments well. One trick i learned is not just changing velocity, but also ever so slightly, moving the individual notes on the piano roll, so they are not so perfectly timed. This gives a much more human feel.

    Hi Beagle

I'm not really skilled enough to give good, constructive critiques. I'm still hopping 'round that learning curve and trying to train my ears. But I did give your tunes a listen and liked them. I am always amazed at how quickly you guys can complete a song.

Beagle: You got my attention!!!! "...scanned it in from sheet music and edited it"??? Would you care to elaborate on how thats done? For those of us who are "staff challenged" it would be HEAVENLY (despite it's faults).

thanks a lot, wickerman and pete! I appreciate the compliments. Robo - I had done that on Be Thou My Vision, but I got in a hurry on If I Stand and didn't vary the timing any. I'll go back and work on that.

Greek - yep! It's actually not a very quick process, but it's a lot easier than learning difficult songs on the keyboard. Photoscore

I have the photoscore midi lite which I think cost me $24. it has some limitations, and it doesn't read everything perfectly, so you have to edit it before you can save it as a midi file.

then there's also a problem where it always limits the notes to 360 ticks per quarternote, but you have to edit all the notes once you've scanned it anyway, so after you change the global setting, you can change the notes in CW. Very worth the money, IMO!

Not bad dawg, i feel you have a good grasp of the software, mostly you just need to work on the finer points like FX and panning just a bit, the midi is always a challenge, but well worth the effort in the end. try some little tweeks like timing adjustments with small note sliding and stuff it will get better and better.

Beagle, I can't really add to the comments already expressed other than to say you have a good singing voice very pleasing to the ear.
