Dimension/Rapture midi control

There seem to be two distinct scenarios where midi control can play:

(1) Sound design
(2) Performance

I think the requirements for midi control in the two scenarios are different. In design you want to be able to milk all you can out of your midi controller(s) in terms of adjusting parameters within the soft synth. For performance... well I'm not a performer, it just seems different.

Multitimbral seems to be a current bone of contention. For design you want (or at least I want) to play all patches with one note on one channel, but I want to control all the knobs with everything I've got. The performance view seems a bit different (judging by some recent posts).

Maybe soft syths should have disting design and perform modes.
