Best controller for Sonar/ProTools?
Price is a factor.

I don't know of any cheap ones other then the wireless one, the Tranzport from Frontier Design. Most of those things are way over priced for no apparent reason. I got the Tranzport because I needed a way to record alone but could not find enough value in the big ones to be worth the money, it's not like they do anything you can't do with the mouse they just let you make a royal mess of your envelopes real quick.

Here is the only one - you didn't say what the price range was - but I don't know of another controller (as I think the term is defined) that will work with both PT and Sonar. Franks right about a transport control with some pretty amazing plusses... -D

depending on your midi I/O box, the Mackie Universal Controller will work
with both Sonar and PT. please be advised that PT is *very* sensitive to the MIDI
interface that you use with these devices. for example, the M-audio midi boxes
don't work with the MCU (ironic isn't it)? you do have to switch the MCU from
HUI mode to "regular" mode when moving between the two programs.

I'm curious... as to how Pro-Tools displays tracks on the MCU. Here's what I wish Sonar did: I would like Sonar to display only the tracks I've got showing in the active view (track view for me 99% of the time). Currently it displays every track, even the hidden ones. As the projects I work on typically have anywhere from 24 to sometimes close to a 100 tracks, it gets to be a pain to be scrolling through all this stuff on the MCU. If the MCU only displayed what was visible and ignored what was hidden, it would make a huge improvement in productivity and usability. I'm wondering if Pro-Tools can do this with the MCU?

gosh . it's been a while, but my recollection is that it mirrors the mix window's tracks.

ps: Digi's support of the Mackie's is not so great BTW. they make it clear
they would prefer you use one of their controllers ;-)

The MotorMix is good, even with ProTools. And yes, Jeff- you're right. The surface mirrors the mix window's tracks.

Im thinking about getting the Mackie Universal Pro...
Is anyone using the MCU Pro with SONAR X1.....any issues?
I see Sweetwater has the MCU for $999 (soooo under a grand)...anyone know of a better deal?

I may be cheap, but unless I ran a professional money-making studio, I wouldn't spend $1200 on a control surface when I can use the display and a mouse to do the same thing for free. Setting up a control surface is not the piece of cake they would lead you to believe it is. I'm just sayin'....

I wouldn't agree at all. But, I've been using an MCU and extenders for about 6 years. So, I know how my workflow has been enhanced to the point that I can fly around in SONAR. No shoulder problems anymore as well. And, it took all of about 20 minutes to setup. For the 15% of tasks requiring a mouse, I use a Kensington Pro trackball. The track ball is about the size of a cue ball. My 2¢... Earl
