Presonus Digimax FS

I just read the manual for the Digimax FS - it says the DAC outputs are TRS outs used when there is a signal going into the ADAT optical inputs - Why would you want to do this on a pre? I thought they'd function as a second set of outs for the pre allowing you to drive two recorders in paralell (which would be exactly what I want) Anybody have one and can shed some light on this?

thanks
-D

Ok I see if you've got a digi console and you need analog outputs you could use the smux to do this - why would you do this in a pre - I still don't get it?

So... are the pres any good in your opinion? Any experience?

I believe those would be for a tape return like function? So 8 channels of adat go out to sonar and the direct outs at the same time. The DAC outputs would be fed from whats been recorded. does that make sense?

Windows 7 Pro 64bit, Core i7 920, Asus p6td deluxe, Sonar X1c PE, Motu 2408 mk3, Apogee Mini DAC, 3x UAD-1, Digimax FS, Motu Microlite, MCU, Tranzport, Nocturn. And more...

From what I've read Craig the DAC's are outs to be used by patching the SMUX inputs directly to analog TRS outs - this would add 8 channels of analog out (24/96) to anything talking ADAT optical - so they are aptly named DAC's - do you have one? How are the sonics?

No I do not own one, but have been looking at this and other similar products to add to my arsenal. As far as sonics, I m sure I'll get better results than with my Behringer ADA 8000 I just quickly read through the section you were referring to in the manual online. I just figured it ment that adat out from the digimax to your interface was the same signal as the direct outs, adat out from interface to adat in of the digimax would feed to the DAC TRS outputs. This means you could send any signal to these outputs from your drop down list in Sonar. You could for example run a 5.1 surround mix with these outputs if you really wanted to. But then again maybe I need to read the whole manual

Windows 7 Pro 64bit, Core i7 920, Asus p6td deluxe, Sonar X1c PE, Motu 2408 mk3, Apogee Mini DAC, 3x UAD-1, Digimax FS, Motu Microlite, MCU, Tranzport, Nocturn. And more...

Okay, mine is here, and I've done some tests already - some samples to come. I think I own the first in my state.

So far, I'd say the pres are dry sounding not as open and airy as I'd hope. I'll try to get some comparison samples done this week.

the analogs are to feed your house system or monitors when recording live--same signal as the ADAT outs--in my case I actually use the analogs in my studio--digital is always a little risky when you have a vocalist/guitarist coming from a couple of hundred miles away---or a client that doesn't appreciate delays. I use my digimax for all my drum recordings--yes--I think you will feel a lot better about it than the behringer.
