I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY

after mixingdown a track and exporting it as a wav file (riff) - i play the file in say wmp / real player ect... the volume of the wave is lower than it plays in sonar. when i look at my soundcards mixer the asio and wave out volume is both set to 0db. i use songs ripped from cd's and mp3's as volume references for for my tracks. ripped songs and mp3's always play louder in real player ect.. but my mixes translate nicely in my car / boom boxes (or i take my mix to best buy and listen on various systems) i dont understand why this happens. can anyone feel me on this...

Not sure that I'd want to feel you but I'll have a go at answering the question ...

I suspect it may be because your mixes aren't using compression on the master, whereas the commercial ones you talk of probably do.

A quick and easy way to check this is to import your stereo mixed wave file back into a new file, then on a separate track import one that's been ripped off a CD. Compare the wave forms.

I suspect you'll find that your peaks are fewer and furher cbetween and look more "spikey" whereas the one you're comparing it to stays at high volume for longer and possibly looks a little more like a clipped hedge.

Check your bus outputs and make sure you don't have some routed to the main output bus and others routed to your soundcard.

It's the media player. Test it for yourself by limiting the begeezers out of something and then listen on the wmp.

    have a good one

3E0's suggestion was what popped into my mind first.

Disable all of those bloody daft WMP & RP settings such as WOW/SRS, volume levelling, etc.
