Cell Phones

Am I losing my hearing or does cell phone technology just plain suck? I'm not talking about phone features. I'm talking about the quality of the phone signals and the voice audio. This has been going on for a long time. It seems to be getting worse and worse. I get calls from clients and between dropouts and terrible sound quality, it's an annoying chore to tell what they are saying. Anyone else see the same problems? I'm worried I'm losing my hearing

Motorolla phones seem to have the best sound, the other brands seem to be focused on adding spamable features and... oh yeah.. we also have to provice voice.

Maybe it's just certain providers. This particular area I live in is pretty bad. I can't even get a signal in my living room (Verizon). But clients call me on my landline all the time and it just seems like I'm struggling to hear them between the dropouts and hissy crappy sound quality. I can tell instantly when I'm talking to someone on a cell phone vs a regular phone. It's like talking to someone on a squwak box - (that ugly background sort of sound quality).

I have Verizon also, and I just bought a Motorola Razr V3 and that is the best phone I've had in a long time, as far as sound quality and ability to find a signal goes. But I live in the boonedocks so I don't get very good reception when I'm at home. And I work in a different boonedocks so I don't get good reception there either. But when I'm driving from one to the other, it works great. Or if I go to Houston or Humble it works really well.

With just about every man, woman and child in America owning their own personal cellphones, you'd think the companies could afford to put up a few more towers.

I'll agree with the decreased quality. I blame compression in general from cellular providers compressing to get more calls on already overloaded networks to mp3s being the new standard of music and people get used to decreased sound quality. Then there is the whole "I'm talking on my cell phone in a loud environment why can't you hear me?" as the phone compression fights to discern background from voice.

I'm just down on compression and cell providers so I'm generally cranky about this topic.

But I do admit I like the convenience of a cell phone so I tolerate it.

Dick Tracy Toys, that's all they are as far as I'm concerned. When business is strongest (generally spring and fall) its not uncommon for me to come home and have 7 or 8 messages on my answering machine. If they're left from a dopey cell phone, a good deal of the time there will be drop-outs to the point where I may or may not get their name or phone number either one! I guess they're nice to keep in the glove box for emergencies but other than that I wish they'd just go away! You'd think people would have better sense than to leave an important message from a Dick Tracy Toy. I mean, its one thing to leave a message to your brother or best friend about little things, but if you've got an imprtant message to leave, for Pete's sake do it right and use a grown up phone.

Oh yeah I the same dropped call problem and also sound quality issues , some one told me to get a Motorolla but it was just as bad and it was not a cheap one now I have an LG , still dropped allot of calls so after doing allot of checking around I bought a cell phone boosted , there is a small antenna on the roof and the boosted mounted inside my studio , I bought this unit about 2 years ago and have not dropped any calls since .

i have a sanyo phone on sprint's network. i haven't had a dropped call in a long time but then i don't use my cell that much. the voice quality for sprint to sprint is tolerable.

expect this problem to crop up on landlines as soon as it's more profitable for phone companies to route landline calls over IP networks. i think they are already doing this in some cases but haven't got anything solid to back that up.

I agree. Cell phones sound very bad. That's one reason I don't own one. The others being the high cost, low reliability, and lack of need from my end. I got to talk on a cell phone when I was in Japan and it sounded as good, if not better, than a landline. I don't think it's the phones so much as it is the phone networks. The US is a really big place. Getting good coverage here would be a major undertaking.

Coincidentally, I heard a program on NPR yesterday about an airline in Europe that was considering putting cell phones in every seat. Obviously most people thought it was a terrible idea. The show quoted from a recent survey which said that 60% of all the people surveyed said that they'd rather go to the dentist than sit next to somebody with a cell phone. Walking around in public places yapping on a stupid cell phone is like wearing a "kick me" sign. Nobody wants you around. Put it in the glove box where it belongs and forget about it.

    LOL

Wow, you hate cell phones almost as much as I do.

    Actually, I hate phones period.
I wouldn't even have a landline except for emergencies....and ordering pizza...

Yes! I could never see John Wayne walking around yapping his fool head off on a phone. Men are supposed to be strong and silent. We leave yapping to old women. I bet if he was still alive he'd say, "Hell, I don't even answer the phone when I'm home". I know I seldom do.
