Sample Rates

Hi guys, hope you can help me on this one! I have an audiophile 2496 card and record using it's spdif input from my Korg Triton Studio workstation. My Korg only outputs through it's spdif out at either 48kHz or 96kHz. Here's my problem... when I set the audiophile to spdif, it uses the Korg as it's master clock source, so if I had a project in Sonar recording at 44.1, all my playback would get sped up during a live record over previously recorded tracks and make things nice and complicated. So obviously the solution is to set Sonar to record at 48 or 96 kHz to match the audiophile's/korg's sample rate. My worry with this is that I've been reading a lot lately that if the final product is going to be a CD, you should only record at either 44.1 or 88.2kHz, because mixing down a project recorded at 48 or 96kHz down to 44.1 can do more harm to the mix than you could benefit from using 48 or 96 in the first place. So what I'm trying to figure out is if there is any way to record via spdif into a 44.1 or 88.2kHz project in Sonar from my Korg without pitch/speed issues due to non matching sample rates between sonar and my soundcard/korg or if there is any harm in recording at say 48 or 96kHz in Sonar? I also have a few plug-ins that only support up to 48kHz so the best option would be to set my Sonar project to 48, and set my audiophile and korg to 48 as well. But will I really have any issues when mixing down to 44.1?

Sorry, that was a bit long, hopefully I explained myself well enough, thanks for reading! :)

When using a digital interface the sample rate output of the device MUST match the sample rate of the Sonar Project there is no way around that. However, if you use the analog outputs of the synth you can use any sample rate you like in Sonar.

Recording at 48k is not a bad thing. I have many projects transfered from ADAT that are 48k and I just resample them to 44.1 before going to CD and they come out just fine. I use Sound Forge but I think Sonar will also let you export at 44.1 and do the resample of the project on the fly.

Try a little test recording the Korg analog and digital and see if there is a big difference. The easy solution might be to not use SPDIF and just go analog. In fact the clock in the Korg might not even be as good as the one in the sound card so that is a risk also. If the Korg has SPDIF in you would hook up the other cable and clock off the sound card.

You've been misinformed (and reading the wrong materials)...Just make sure that all the "toys" you're playing with are "getting along" with each other--In other words, the settings for all of your devices are configured for the same sample rate/bit depth...When it's time to mix, you'll resample to 44.1kHz/16 bit and dithering will take care of the conversion differences...

Thanks so much guys, and yes, I easily could have been misinformed, there is so much info out there. I guess that's half the reason I'm here, to get a few opinions! I did a project last night at 48 and the mixdown sounds fine, I have no worries at all now. All my devices are running at 48 without any issues, so that's what I'll stick to. Thanks again! :D
