ORIGINAL: LOwrestling2001 So i'm gonna get 4 TRS cables for my record and playback setup from my mixer to the soundcard. Anyways, I know some of u don't like monster as a company, but try to be fair interms of quality. I'm looking at. 1. mogami purepatch (not gold plated) for 22.95 per 6 foot cable http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Mogami-Pure-Patch-14-14-TRS-Cable?sku=339035\ 2. monster studio link (gold plated) for 29.95 per 6 foot cable http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Monster-Cable-Studio-Link-500-Interconnect-TRS-M-TRS-M?sku=331684 3. monster dual TRS dj cables (gold plated) for 24.95 per PAIR of 6 foot cables http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Monster-Cable-DJ-Cable-Dual-TRS?sku=331692 from what i understand mogami is top notch and gives the most clean/accurate sound, but that monster is also good. however, i do also understand taht the monster studio link is competing with mogami gold cables (and that purepatch may not be as good as the monster gold series?). so basically in terms of quality and bang for the buck, which of these 3 options would u guys recommend? also, whats the diff between the monster dual TRS dj cables vs just TRS patch cables? thanks Remove Monster from your list. Snake oil company with a bad reputation for cruddy construction and inflated prices. Look at Mogami, Canare, Whirlwind, etc... Good luck! Corey

ORIGINAL: LOwrestling2001 so u honestly think that the mogami non-gold plated is better? im just checking, or are u just saying this because u hate monster as a company themselves Gold plating is not necessarily better. Gold is an excellent conductor, but it is also prone to oxidization, and bonding it to other metals can create capacitance between the layers. What makes a better cable is more intelligent overall design and better build quality, not one particular feature or another. I doubt sincerely that you will be able to hear a lick of difference in any of these cables, or even detect any difference without very expensive equipment. Cables are not voodoo. They are electrical conductors, nothing more and nothing less. They are meant to conduct electrical signals with a minimum of noise and interference. Their performance as such can be pretty easily measured. Their incidental attributes, such as durability, flexibility, coil-ability, and so forth are all pretty safely tested and vouched for with respected brands at this price level. I would have to be working with a pretty damn expensive signal chain before I started to worry about whether non-gold-plated mogami patch cables were holding back my sound. Cheers.

The dual TRS cables you mentioned are just two cables connected/molded together as opposed to a single cable. The reason they offer that design is just a neat way to keep cables routed cleanly. I agree with the rest - avoid Monster and concentrate on Mogami or Canare (both available from Markertek.com)

I use use a combination of Monster, Mogami and Radio Shack. I'm using Presonus Digimax preamps and Motu 2408MkIII interface, and I can't tell any difference in sound between all three of those cables. Granted, Presonus and MOTU are not the best you can get by any means, but they are not cheap crap either. As a high-voltage electrical technician at a cogeneration plant, I really think the whole cable thing is voodoo. I'm not saying they don't make a difference. I'm saying that difference is so minute the human ear cannot detect it. I would concern myself a lot more with the build quality and durability of cables than the sound characteristics. And in my experience Radio Shack cables hold up just as well as any of them. I would buy the cheaper cables and spend my money on something that will actually improve my sound enough to be noticeable. If you're just going to plug them in and leave them there, most cables will hold up fine. If you are constantly going to be moving them around, then the cheaper ones might die sooner. If I owned a $100k or greater studio, I might concern myself with the types of metals used for cable conducters. But as a maybe $10K studio owner, I think there are much bigger issues to worry about. Like what type of preamps and mics to use.
