New NI FM8

This looks to be the successor to FM7.

I really like the sound of it. I think it would complement Rapture well. How would this instrument be "patched" in to Sonar and/or Project 5? As a DXI, or do you have to use VST? (Sorry I'm pretty ignorant on this matter). If you have to use it as a VST, does that mean you have to use the adaptor, or is it already included in Sonar 6 and Project 5?

    1. Either. I think the VST version usually tends to be the more reliable of the two when it's an NI product.

    2. There is no adapter in S6 by all accounts, the VST hosting is now native. P5 still uses the adapter, although I would be very surprised if this doesn't change with the P5 update early next year.

Thanks, xylyx. I'm thinking about going for the $99 P5 offer after I upgrade to S6. So I will use P5 as sort of a "laboratory" to mess about with my softsynths, trying to learn how to use them.

FM8 caught my attention too! I think it sounds wonderful. I need to read more about that arpeggiater it has.

You can use Sonar for that too.

I got FM7 as part of Komplete 3 and I'm finding it fairly useful. And there are a ton of old DX7 patches around. A little work and they can be fattened up.

I'm not sure I like it enough to pony up full cost for a copy by itself though (as opposed to part of Komplete which I got for $599 in the recent sale).

And a great arpeggiator we already have with P5 v2. In fact, I've been laying down a track with FM7 and the P5 arp. tonight.

If you registered your copy of Komplete 3 after 1st September, I believe you are entitled to a free upgrade to Komplete 4 (so I read over at KvR). If it was before then, see if you get hold of one of the remaining copies of Komplete Care 2006 that are around, which will see you get all the new synths for the cost of the KC2006 (don't think it includes Massive though).

True, but P5 with its pattern-orientation seems to lend itself more to experimentation where you can focus on the synths.

Yeah, you are probabaly right. However, I have been quite successful in creating my own arps using Sonar's piano roll. But, I'm sure you can do more complex things in P5. I don't have P5 so I guess that's why the arp functions within the instruments themself interest me.

There's another way, too. If you get Komplete Care 2006 you get the Komplete 4 upgrade (including FM8, Battery 3, Absynth 4, and Acoustik Piano) and a coupon for $160 fo NI's online store. Guitar Center lists it online for $299 ($40 less than K4 upgrade price) and if you can get to a GC store it may be less.

Is this really true? SONAR 5 was advertized as having native VST support, but what that apparently mant was that the adapter was self loading and running.

Haven't tried v6 out yet (just got home from work and will do later), but apparently Sonar 6 no longer wraps VST plugins as DX plugins and they will no longer show up in other software like SoundForge. I think that all plugins are still forced to use stereo outputs (hence the loud negativity of some people on the Sonar forum who use DFH and BFD), but it is native now...
