POD XT

Hi -

In Sonar is it better to record my guitar POD XT via audio cables or should i be recording via USB? I have been recording via audio cables so far. Is there an advantage to recording via USB??

thx

Yes. I believe that will give you a complete digital path from the Pod to Sonar which will be very clean. You won't pick up any extraneous noise from your audio cables or mixer.

I haven't had the best luck w/ my XTL recording via USB. I have a hard time getting consistent levels, but I also gave up pretty quickly each time. The reason may be that I usually have Edit running at the same time (via USB obviously) as Sonar HS4xl so I can adjust my settings right there on the computer. Also, I'm not sure how you do stereo effects like ping pong delays w/ USB.

My setup is Guitar -> XTL (L and R outputs)-> Behringer mixer (L and R inputs -> E-MU 0404 L and R inputs. Lots of connections, I know, but so far I've found it pretty easy to use stereo effects by assiging the L input to one track and the R input to another track in HS. I'll probably tool around w/ the USB some more, but right now things are working pretty good for me. Hope that helps.

You have yours set up exactly how I have mine except I go into the Pre Mobil USB instead of E-MU 0404. Maybe I'll just keep it the way I have it as it works fine. I was just curious about USB.

So you record a left and a right channel on your guitar but not in stereo? Is that so you can add one effect to the left and a different effect to the right? Do you pan one 100% left and other 100% right? Just curious how folks do things as i'm still kind of new at this whole recording thing.

    thx!!

If you're going to record the Pod via USB you should use the Toneport software to control the Pod (rather than L6 Edit) AND to serve as the interface to drivers to control levels etc. Toneport is designed specifically for that purpose.

Is Toneport software free? i've been trying to find info on internet but all i find is Toneport hardware. I am trying to avoid buying anything since i already put my money into the POD XT.

Just when I use something like Ping Pong delay. That way I have playback that Ping Pongs. Maybe there's a way do do it w/ USB, but I haven't figured it out yet.

Go to Line 6's site and download Monkey. Then open Monkey up and it'll let you know what upgrades and programs you can install. Guitarport (I think it's Guitarport, not Toneport - that's something different) is a free download. So is Edit and Gearbox. You can read about all of them.

And I think when I tried recording I did use Guitarport and had all those level problems. But Edit, Guitarport, and Gearbox are all fun. They're all pretty similar, you'll figure out the differences easily enough.

Gearbox is the latest software for all Line 6 hardware connecting to a computer via USB - GuitarPort, TonePort, PodXT, PodXT Live, and Bass Pod. It detects which Line 6 hardware is connected to the computer and automaticlly adjust its features for that hardware.

yes...I meant gearbox. I don't know why I keep calling the software toneport. Thanks for the correction.

As for level problems, I think gearbox and guitarport software have been a little confusing. I Always have to click on the +18 db and then cut the level way back to get a decent signal into Sonar HS.

Yea, I usually have to do the same by clicking on the +18dB button when recording. Once you dial in the perfect level, it works like a charm.
