Need help building a quiet PC
Which power supplies and CPU fans are the quietest? I am looking for a power supply in the 500-600W range, and a CPU fan for a Core 2 Duo.

Do you have a case already picked out? If not the Antec P180 is set up to be very quiet, and a case is a major part of a quiet PC. For power supplies for max quiet you should look at the newer fanless ones, but do your research as some I've seen had bad reputaions for crapping out.

I have not really picked anything out yet so I will consider the Antec P180 case. Any specific recommendations on a fanless power supply? I'm googling it right now, but a lot of the reviews are written by people who also want to sell you one.

I strongly recommend this case: http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/Products.aspx?pid=36 Great looks, easy to use, and virtually silent with a Coolermast 500 watt power supply (I forget the model). One of the best features is the fact that the MOBO tray slides out while you're working on the machine. Makes it VERY easy to install everything! Also, the Aluminum case is much thicker than many, and has excellent heat wicking characteristics. I liked it enough that I now own two machines built inside it, and am about to buy my third. Good luck! Corey

I'm also looking into building a DAW and am considering both the P180 with the Antec Phantom 500 power supply (which I've read some very good user reviews on) and the Antec LifeStyle Sonata II-EC which is a lot cheaper and includes a 450 watt power supply. I also read very good review of it. Sonata 2 review P-180 review I've been using the ADK Pro Audio site (who I just found through this forum) as a reference guide and it's been a big help narrowing down the individual components. I'd love to just buy a DAW from them, but being in Denmark the import duties and VAT make it an unrealistic solution (it would cost me at least 50% more then in the States), but I can build one myself for about the same price. I don't have time tonight, but I got a few questions of my own I need to post soon !! EDIT: I just read a very possitive review of the Cooler Master cabinet mentioned above but it's in Danish so I won't put a link to it . It's the same price as the P-180 (both without PS) over here.

Check out www.quietpc.com You'll find great products and great advice. I've bought loads from them over the years without any problems.

Having used a variety of antec cases, the lower-priced Antec lines are nearly as good as the more expensive lines, in my experience. If you're on a budget, the cheaper "lifestyle" series will get you 90% of the noise-reduction for like half the price. One other area to watch out for is hard disk noise. Seagate's barracuda line is a relatively inexpensive line of quiet, fast hard disks. And of course, sites like quietpc.com are a great resource for information. But if you're willing to pay their price premium, I'd probably just get a company like ADK or liquidDAW to build a complete audio-ready machine. On an apples-to-apples basis, it's really not that much more expensive to buy a purpose-built DAW. Cheers.

My Antec TX1050 is very noisy IMO even though I have fitted it with the quitest fand I could find on silicone gaskets.

Thanks for the replies. I am looking to build a PC myself. Looking to spend about $2000. I like what I have read so far on the Antec P180 case and will probably go with that. Anyone have experience with SeaSonic power supplies? They get good reviews at www.silentpcreview.com I was interested in the SeaSonic S12 Energy Plus.
