Myriad of Problems with GPO/Kontakt in SONAR
My problems with GPO continue. First, I had to set SONAR to ASIO mode, which was not revealed by GPO. Second, my sustain pedal won't do legato (which is supposed to be a feature that makes GPO so "expressive". Third, I can only get two tracks of GPO MIDI to record, the third track appears to record but won't play. Also when I try to load the third instance of GPO, it loads around 10 instances all at nce. Now, I have recorded a couple of short GPO songs. Afterwards, I tried to play two songs I recorded as audio from an old tape recorder and did some SONAR mixing on, but now they won't play. You click on start play and nothing happens, from either the beginning of the song or at different points in the song. Are these SONAR problems? Should I use the Cubasis VST that came with GPO? I tried the GPO forum withouth any luck.

Yikes! GPO running fine here on Sonar 3, using WDM. Is there a reason why it had you switch to ASIO? Did you configure your sustain pedal to legato mode in the options menu? If so (I'm assuming you did) note that not all the intruments respond to legato commands. Also, I'm not clear on some of your descriptions, as it appears to use "track" and "instance" somewhat interchangeably. When you're talking about problems recording your third MIDI track, are you talking about a third track within a single instance of GPO, or the third instance that you mention in the next sentence?

When you open a new project in SONAR, it automatically opens two MIDI and two audio tracks. I insert one instance of GPO for the first track. I open another instance of GPO for the second track. Then I insert a third MIDI track. Then I insert another instance of GPO. That's where I run into the problems. With regard to the sustain pedal, I tried all the options on the Kontakt Player. And, yes, I'm using it for strings, which is where the sustainpedal is supposed to switch on legato.

With regards to sustain in GPO I don't use a pedal at all. I just draw control data (CC64) in piano roll view when I want to apply legato. Works fine.

Part of what your problem may be is that you might be using the instances of GPO incorrectly. GPO can load in up to eight instruments for each instance. So let's say you load up your strings in one instance -- you have violins in the first slot, Solo violin in second slot, violas in third slot, solo viola in fourth, cellos in fifth, solo cello in sixth, basses in seventh, solo bass in eighth. Now you will need 8 midi tracks to control each one of these -- so for each midi track you assign it to one slot of the first GPO. Now you load up a second instance of GPO and load it with Brass -- same scenerio. Doing it this way you will have many midi tracks before you run out of memory. Now -- running out of memory can still be a problem, depending upon which instruments and combinations you load up. If you load the full grand piano in one slot of one instance of GPO it will take up nearly 1 gig -- if you don't have 2gigs of RAM you aren't going to be able to load much more no matter how many instances of GPO you have. So in order to judge what your problems are we would need to know exactly which instruments you are trying to load where.

GPO legato for strings only works with solo strings, not ensemble strings, I think. Look up in the manual which instruments work with the legato pedal mode. Regarding multiple GPOs, have you tried using GPO Studio VST, which offers six or eight copies of GPO (each with 8 instrument slots) plus Ambience in a single load? I think that is how you're suppose to get the most efficient use out of the application for large ensemble work.

Mkelley has it absolutely right. That's why I asked about your use of "track" and "instance" - seems you're not setting up GPO quite right. Each instance of GPO supports 8 tracks and instruments. Load the first 8 instruments you want in the GPO player, then create 8 MIDI tracks in Sonar, associating each with a separate instrument. Voila - you're running 8 tracks on a single instance of GPO. Oh, and the sustain pedal legato DOES work with ensemble strings. Like billc said, look in the manual on each instrument for "SusLeg" to see if it works with the legato pedal.

Not to seem a "newb" (love that expression), how do you draw cc64 in piano roll view. Everytime I look at control, there's fifty million options and I'm scared that I'll ruin my whole setup (like having sustain on every track all the time). I did what Gary said (all praises be to he) and downloaded the update from NI and it still don't work. Again, the sustain pedal works fine as a sustain pedal, it just won't do legato.[image][/image]

At the bottom of the piano roll there's a separate pane which is probably displaying velocity information for each event. On the left of that pane is a drop down menu. Select "controller" from it instead of "velocity", then select #64 and the appropriate channel. Draw away!

Muy excellente. Hopefully I'll find time to check it out this weekend, in between preparing two cases for jury trials. I saw some guy's thread "Why won't anybody help me?" I can appreciate his frustration. But, you know what? This forum is pretty excellent and, when you do get help, it often works. Carry on, you wayward ones.
