Rapture -- "Key On" trigger for StepGens?

Is there a way to force the StepGens to start at the beginning with each Key On?

Don't use the Sync parameter. Use the Freq instead. Click both mouse buttons on the Sync parameter for the quick-switch. Of course, now if you want to still keep perfect sync, you're going to have to do the math. And play flawlessly, or inject yourself with the Auto-Quantize vaccine.

Gee, that was too quick, Tom. I start giving short answers like that, and no one will recognize me anymore.

Here's something else to consider: draw your "StepGens" into user-defined LFOs. Construct it in any audio editor, with most any file size (within reason), and load it into the Lfowaveform folder. As for a naming convention, start at Lfowaveform027.wav, and stay under Lfowaveform099.wav.

The advantages are that you can draw any kind of shape, have more "Steps" in it, and swing both positively and negatively around the base parameter (or either direction alone). If you use the Freq setting there, a Note On also triggers the onset, but you can choose where the "sequence" starts by Shift+dragging the waveform display. Then there's my favorite: the one-shot mode. Trigger the "sequence", and it dies out after one iteration.

Edit: Almost forgot. With a UD-LFO, you can also delay the 'sequence", or fade it into full depth. OK, I'm done now. I think.

Well, thanks again. I think I read some of your and Rene's posts regarding this...but that was before I owned Rapture I'm not much of a tweaker, but seems pretty cool.

BTW -- which audio editor do you use?

Sound Forge 8. I used to use CoolEdit before the Adobe acquistion, and I still might cave in on that one [now Audition]. I also use the open source Audacity for a couple of unique features and conversions. SF8 is only a two-track, but I've become the most comfortable with it over the long haul. (BTW, the lite Audio version is pretty powerful for the price.) Old habits die hard, but Sound Forge has certain advantages for me.

For LFO creation, I like to set up Regions for internal "sync to tempo", and that additionally works well for wavetable manipulation. You can get some very unique results by using DX/VST FX plugins to extend the processing options from within Sound Forge. If you're interested in a relatively painless way to get into user-defined LFOs, I've got several full banks of them uploaded. Check the link in this post. If you don't have (or care to have) access to Project5.com, then PM me, and I'll send the package to wherever you want. It's pretty much "extract and roll".

Yes--I've read that thread several times Ok -- I've got Audacity. I guess I'll have to experiment soon!

After re-reading Craig A's review, I saw a link for something that may help: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jez.price/effects.htm

I wonder how "custom" it can go?

Thanks, Tom. I remember seeing that myself, but I was having trouble with my VST Adapter at the time. As a result, downloaded but untested, and the two plugins fell by the wayside. I appreciate the reminder. Also worthy of mention: something like the z3ta+ or Alesis Ion waveshapers.

Me, too. I'll let you know what I find out.

Very preliminary results, Tom. I snagged that FiltSeq 1.3 to test as well. You can do most of what it does internally in Rapture, but there are a few nice wrinkles: deep bandpass/notch filters, left/right timing for cutoff and resonance, and the envelopes can ... er, sync to tempo. Sounds good with raw wavetables, but there seems to be some cancellation going on with Rapture's perfectly symmetrical shapes. [Edit: Correction - host-specific phase problem.] I didn't have much luck with the MidiSeq 1.2 generator. Either noobie user error, or I'll have to upgrade to S6 sooner than later.

Now that Rndwave! 1.2: interesting. It outputs a variety of waveshapes very quickly, and stores them in a root level folder. You can just navigate there from the Multisamples Editor, and load them up as new oscillators. They look a little 'lo-res" by default (318 samples), but sound great. There's quite a bit of front-panel adjustment to be had here, though, and I'm still trying out the combinations. Those same generated waveforms make excellent user-defined LFOs. I'd have liked a few more samples to work with to edit them, but the interpolation from within Rapture really does appear flawless.

More later. I did have one crash with quickly replacing one instance with another copy of itself. SynthEdit: it happens. But for the "price", you can't beat this little idea generator. One more tool to stuff into the toolbox.
