$100 preamp, VTB1

a few week ago I got advice here which led to order a Fat Head Ribbon mic, turned out to be back order, so I am still waiting. At $159, it feels like I still have money to spend.

So I was thinking of parting with the other hundred on a Studio Projects VTB1.

My preamps include
DBX 576
Art ProChannel
And the 2 on the EMu 1820m

What are the thoughts on the VTB1. I kind of like that it is Solid State, then add Tube to taste, but then again, there are lots of plugs out there that can do that.
And as far as I know, the Emu are considered goog SS preamps, so I really don't know that it might cover the clean sound from the VTB1.
For Tube preamps, the DBX is light and shiny, the ART is darker.

Would the VTB1 be a new good flavor?

Thank you
Don

    Don,

I haven't tried the others you mention, but...the VTB-1 is my only outboard pre and I pretty much record everything throught it. I like the the solid state setting the best, but it's nice to add the tube stage on some vocals and guitar. For $100 I don't think you can go wrong. FWIW, I'm only looking at pre's in the $500+ range for my next one.

    Good luck-

While I haven''t personally used one, I have heard nothing but good things about the Studio Projects VTB1. How long is the backorder on the Fat Head? I was thinking about getting one myself. When you do get one, let us know what you think about it.

I have two of the VTB-1's and use them a lot. I bought them as a pair for stereo miking of acoustic guitar and use them for more than that. For $100.00 each, its a no brainer. I also bought a plate that mount two units together in one rack space. It think it was $15-$20.00.

    All

    quote on backorder
We have had a tremendous response to this microphone. We've literally sold hundreds of FAT HEAD's within the past week and are temporarily out-of-stock. Our next shipment will arrive in approximately 2-3 weeks.

We are happy to include a vintage-style tweed 20ft XLR cable with your order as compensation for the delay. As soon as the FAT HEAD's arrive, we will ship your order immediately and you will receive tracking information via email that same day.

    endquote

One thing that lead me to the VTB1 was that it has an impedance switch that can be set very low, which is suppose to be very good for a ribbon mic, and 60 db of clean gain, which is huge.
I guess I'll be ordering one this weekend.
As to Stereo micing, the only mic I have more that one of is sm57s and sm58s. Maybe I should get 2 VTB1s. 2 sm57 should work for a stereo miced guitar and make it sound twice as good:-)
