Tascam FW-1082 vs Pre. Firebox

I'm considering these two firewire interfaces as a replacement for my M-Audio Fasttrack. I'm aware of the differences in terms of number of inputs, etc.

What I don't know:

1. Quality of the drivers. I've had miserable luck with M-audio drivers. I'm hoping these are better. I know or think I know that the FW-1082 has x64 drivers now.

2. Quality of the preamps. I know the firebox has a pretty good reputation in that regards. How does the FW-1082 compare.

3. Ability to actually use the max number of inputs at once at 96k. Can they really do it. If not, what is the realistic limit on each unit.

4. Latency - what I can realistically expect to be able to reduce latency to on each. With my Fasttrack, running Guitar Rig 2 live is basically a no-go. Can these do it.

5. Input monitoring. I'm pretty sure the Firebox does this well. How about the FW-1082?

I don't expect anyone to know the answer to all these (but if so great). Please chime in even if you have only a partial answer (like being able to run guitar rig 2 live with the firebox or whatever).

TIA.

The firebox has 'okay' pres, I wasn't blown away with them.
The firebox comes with a 'mixer' app. I used mine on my Mac, and not windows, but the drivers were a non-issue. It just worked. I was able to achieve very low latencies with it using software as simple as GarageBand

Me either.....I find they are quiet enough, little coloration of the sound but seem a little weak. There is a software setting where you can apply a +10 db boost to the pre's. What I'm experiencing running a telecaster with hot pickups with my volume pot set at near 100% on the guitar, requires near 80% gain on the firebox and this includes the +10db software setting. Still quiet though but this makes me worry about lower output signals.

AMD ATHLON 64 (2.2ghz), 1 gig ram, Windows XP using Sonar HS4 and Guitar Rig 2 as a VSt at 24 bit, 44.1khz I can get 8ms latency without causing grief but I'm more comfortable at 16bit at 44.1khz and can achieve 2.5ms latency. Wouldn't think of recording at 96khz unless my audience was a pack of dogs,

Don't know much about the drivers but all apps I use, I haven't had problems.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up getting the firebox and I have been very happy with it.

I've been running my Dean through it to guitar rig2 (from Komplete so without the hardware) and have also used the +10db boost. I haven't had to go 80% with that guitar. Noise hasn't been a noticeable issue. I thought the sound quality was good. I haven't hooked my American Strat to it yet. It might well need more gain than the Dean.

One thing I do love about it is the headphone amp. That can be turned up considerably louder than I want. And the sound clarity is excellent.
