Need help getting softsynths to play through my Keyboard...

I'm new to all this and was wondering if anyone could help me to get sounds in Project 5 to play using my Yamaha DX 7. I connected my keyboard to the computer using a USB Midi Interface. I installed the interface driver and went in Project 5 (Midi Devices) and selected the midi input port for the interface I intalled. I then selected Dimensions softsynth in the Add Track section but I can only hear sounds from my DX 7.... Can anyone Please help me get set up to use my dx 7 as a controller so I can play sounds in Project 5 and other Software??? also if anyone knows of some turorials for dummies !!(Smile) that I can find that are mre detailed than the ones in Project 5 i would greatly appreciate it !!

Thanks, Larry

I don't own Project 5, but it sounds like your USB interface is transferring Audio instead of midi. What interface are you using?

You'll be hearing sounds from your computer sound monitor instead of from your DX 7. The soundcard for your computer will have to be hooked up to your monitoring system, and you'lll have to have that card chosen in P5 (Options>Audio). Then the midi (not audio) from your DX 7 will need to get to P5 (Options>Midi Devices).

HOpe this helps. Further help can be found in setting up P5 under Help>Contents>Basics>Basic Oerations.

It doesn't sound like you can hear your computer. In P5, under Options>Audio pick your computer's sound card as an output. Under Options>Midi Devices pick your USB Midi input device (you don't save what it is). Make sure your DX7's midi (not audio) is going into the USB device and your computer's audio (the same as picked out under Options>Audio) is plugged into your sound monitoring system - same as your DX7 if you can hear it.

Check out Help>Contents>BAsics>BAsic Operations for further set up info.

No problemo - we all started out and remember the frustration. Even old hands have hard times with new functions or tricks. We took a couple of stabs and hit the right problem. Next time, you'll know more and be able to give more precise info about the problem. Soon, you'll be doing the same for others.

Believe it or not, "how to make a softsynth play" is the FAQ #1 in every forum, support channel and help desk. It's just so enormously counter-intuitive...
