Video Card Question

I have allways had slow screen redraws with the mixer in Sonar and I am wondering if it might be my video card. I have a factory Dell Dimension 3000 and I looked inside and it appears that it is an on board video set up. I only have PCI slots and I was wondering what you guys thought. Should I buy a decent PCI video card and disable the on board video? If so any recomendations?

My sys:
Dimension 3000
2.8 Pent 4
1 gig ram
Win XP home

No internet
No games
No antivirus

Thank you,
K

A big part of the answer is what kind of audio interface do you have. If it's a PCI card I would lean against adding a video card that may end up hogging available PCI bandwidth. I remember back in the old days a common phrase from tech support at DAW software and hardware companies was "there's a conflict with the video card." With AGP that has dropped off but probably not totally since a bad AGP video card can still hog bandwidth that can affect audio interfaces.

Have you tried disabling all the visual effects in XP? I'm not sure it would help but also try using the classic mode for the XP appearance.

most authors of novels regarded as classics are dead, classic novels are, therefore, most likely to be written by dead people.

Thank you for your reply MarlboroMan23.

My audio interface is a USB right now. And yes I have done the major tweaks to the system such as disabling the effects and themes. I simply do not now what kind of benefit would be gained by getting a PCI vid card and I am wondering if anyone else was in the same boat :-)

Is there anyway to find out how much memory my on board video connection is using? I see there is a Radeon® X1300 256 MB PCI Graphics Card. Any experiences..anyone?

    kryon,
Typically, onboard video will use 8 to 64mb of system ram. And you are right, it is noturiously sluggish.
IRQ conflicts were common in earlier versions of Windows, but XP handles this much better.
AGP is faster, but for your purposes, PCI will be fast enough. You would see a huge inprovement.
I am running dual monitors from a nVidea 6600(AGP) on a 2.4ghz P4, with virtually no drain on the CPU.
Make sure you get one for standard PCI, not PCI Express. It's not the same. I see that most X1300 cards are PCI Express, so be careful.

Thank you for your reply RobertB. Much appreciated. Knowledge that I did not know for sure.
